Vol Tone

John Donne was raised in a Roman Catholic family but he was thought to have lived a much less devout lifestyle. A lot of his work was based on religion but in particular the Holy Sonnets are thought to be his last ditch attempt for acceptance by God. A tremendous amount of anxiety is expressed in these sonnets and that comes from Donne's fear that he will never be forgiven for his sins. In the eleventh Holy Sonnet Donne is speaking to God while at the same time creating an argument in defense of his sinful actions. He admits his sins in a manner that left the reader feeling sympathy for his wrongdoings while at the same time making several personal comparisons to religious events like the crucifixion. The speaker closed by making the point that since God has experienced life in the flesh he can sympathize on the ordinary man's struggle with morality.

In the first octave Donne begins with a very bitter tone. The first line starts the sonnet in a slight variation of iambic pentameter in order to stress the words spit and face. The first word spit is stressed and because that is such a powerful choice of language, it will inevitably evoke some sort of emotional connection with the reader. The line begins "Spit in my face". "Spit" is followed by two unstressed words to prepare the reader for the highly emphasized word "face".

The last six stresses in the first line follow perfect iambic pentameter in order to set up the cadence of sorry actions listed in next few lines. The second lines first four stresses mirror the first line in order to emphatically pronounce the word scoff. The use of comma's becomes highly important in the second line. The line flows fine despite both the fourth and fifth syllables being stressed. This is made possible by the brief pause afforded by the comma.

Jiko Best, Vol. 2 $22.99 While holding the record for oldest solo artist to chart at Oricon's number one position (he was 61-years-old at the time), longtime folk and pop stalwart Kazumasa Oda released Jiko Best, Vol. 2 in 2007, collecting pieces from his long and storied career. The bulk of the music here takes the form of light but soulful balladry. Oda's voice is continually strong, but able to convey emotion without the affectations of hoarseness or vocal na?vet? that some contemporary artists will use. Instead, he emotes through sheer force of will -- still hitting the notes he desires, and keeping a perfectly clear tone throughout, he manages to make the ballads seem more direct, yet more personal nonetheless. There are touches of '80s influence here, with the occasional synth keyboard moaning in the background, but the compositions are otherwise essentially timeless. There is no dated element to the sound or the delivery (aside from the occasional synths and one stray song that seems strangely George Michael-inspired), there is nothing obviously driving the songs with contemporary influences or pop-based demands. The sound seems entirely Oda's, and it stays in the realm of the sublime throughout. Oda's voice is clear and well-controlled, but the compositions also work perfectly with its limitations and strengths, making for extremely well-constructed ballads. Oda is one of the masters of his form, and while Jiko Best, Vol. 2 is simply a compilation, it also provides an excellent showcase of Oda at the top of his game. ~ Adam Greenberg
