Playing a melodious lead on your electric guitar is the most self satisfying thing and accomplishment that a guitarist can ever get. But the journey towards that ultimate nirvana entails right kind of training from an expert tutor, determination and a great deal of hard work from your part. It is often found that many people spoil their guitar career by learning from random sites and videos found on YouTube, often learning all the wrong things, get demoralized about themselves and ultimately quit playing guitar forever. So don't let that happen to you. I will give you few tips in order to achieve your goal of playing some exciting lead riffs on your guitar.
Getting a strong basic foundation - I have seen many people who start learning guitar often directly jump on to learn tablature or tabs as it is popularly known. That is one of the dangerous things that you can do to yourself as a guitarist. You should always start learning guitar with standard staff notation. Tabs are only a shortcut to playing a song on guitar and have got many limitations. You should always start by learning the names of the strings, notes on each fret and how they are denoted on a staff. Also it is important to learn the terminologies associated with notes like a quarter note is called a crotchet, an eighth note a quaver and so on. You should also understand various time signatures like 4/4, ¾, 6/8 and the cut time or 2/2 etc and also get a good understanding of time intervals of notes and tones.
Learning scales - Once you have got the basic concepts out of the way, you should understand how to build scales on different keys. There are different formulae for building a major scale, a minor scale, a pentatonic scale and a harmonic minor scale etc
Learning Chords - Scales and chords are very closely related. If you don't know scales then it's highly difficult to understand chords. And I must say these two are the life blood to learning any western musical instrument. So it is very important to know how to build chords. Chords are built from scales.
Do not be in the impression that these are the only 3 things that you need to know to be an expert guitarist. But these are some of the key concepts that you must know as a guitarist. To become more matured as a guitar player, you must learn to internalize and build different scales, play them on the entire fretboard rather than stuck to one or two positions, visualize them on the entire fret board, master various genres like blues, jazz, rock and heavy metal and so on. Then comes shredding, which is the staple to rock n' roll, blues, jazz and heavy metal. The list goes on and on. In fact there is no end to learning any musical instrument. So before you try to learn all the advanced guitar techniques make sure that you have a solid foundation laid on the basics. All the best for a bright musical career.

Icons of Rock [Two Volumes] $175 More than half a century after the birth of rock, the musical genre that began as a rebellious underground phenomenon is now acknowledged as America's-and the world's-most popular and influential musical medium, as well as the soundtrack to several generations' worth of history. From Ray Charles to Joni Mitchell to Nirvana, rock music has been an undeniable force in both reflecting and shaping our cultural landscape. Icons of Rock offers a vivid overview of rock's pervasive role in contemporary society by profiling the lives and work of the music's most legendary artists. Most rock histories, by virtue of their all-encompassing scope, are unable to cover the lives and work of individual artists in depth, or to place those artists in a broader context. This two-volume set, by contrast, provides extensive biographies of the 24 greatest rock n' rollers of all time, examining their influences, innovations, and impact in a critical and historical perspective. Entries inside this unique reference explore the issues, trends, and movements that defined the cultural and social climate of the artists' music. Sidebars spotlight the many iconic elements associated with rock, such as rock festivals, protest songs, and the British Invasion. Providing a wealth of information on the icons, culture, and mythology of America's most beloved music, this biographical encyclopedia will serve as an invaluable resource for students and music fans alike. |
