Tuning Acoustic

Guitar accessories are very often overlooked when people begin playing the acoustic guitar. This is understandable, after all, you got the guitar to make music, not to accommodate a bunch of things like tuners, capos, humidifiers, cases and instructional material.

Nevertheless, these things are very important. Fortunately, these accessories are not expensive and will more than pay for themselves. Your playing will be better and your instrument will greatly appreciate the care and attention.

The guitar tuner

When playing with others, or along with a recording, it is essential to be in tune. Before there were reliable electronic tuners available, you had to rely on pitch pipes , whistles and such to get tuned up. Now, you can select which string you are tuning, pluck your string and adjust the tuning pegs until the needle is centered, or you get a green light. Simple, but very effective.

These tuners are really useful when playing in a jam with others. You can just step back and without even hearing your string, get it tuned very accurately. No more fumbling along with endless attempts at getting on the same wavelength.

Guitar humidifiers

These little devices can make a huge difference in how long your guitar stays tuned, how it sounds, but most importantly, the wood will be preserved. Without a humidifier, the neck will bow and the body could easily crack.

During the winter the household air tends to be quite dry from the heating system, this is terrible for your guitar. A little humidifier placed in the guitar will easily remedy this problem.

The capo

The little clamp on capo is a great invention. You can change keys just by moving it up or down the neck, and still play the standard chords you are familiar with. This really helps with singing, sometimes your voice just won't reach the range you think the song should be in. A capo quickly remedies this problem, just change keys by moving it.

Fiddle players use certain keys much more than others and the capo makes it very convenient for an acoustic guitarist to play along. For example: put the capo on the second fret, play a G chord and you actually have an A chord, which will make life much easier for the fiddle player.

Guitar cases

The simple guitar case will keep your acoustic guitar in one piece and safe for a very long time. Without a case you are just asking for trouble. You will be exposing the wood to humidity, temperature changes, the potential for dropping something on it, and more.

Storing you instrument between uses in the case is a good practice to get into. Never just lean your guitar up against the wall, or in the corner. It will eventually fall and could easily break. Even if it does not break, it could crack or weaken enough to break in pieces later on.

Instructional material and courses

Without a good way to learn, you are more or less left to your own devices. Your playing will develop many times faster and better if you invest in some quality instructional materials or courses. There are many very good ones available, at a reasonable price.

All of these accessories can really make a difference in the playing and enjoyment of your acoustic guitar.
