Thuggery was a phenomenon very much in Vogue, both as a part of culture and livelihood in the India of the days prior to the British Raj. The Mughals and the Indian rulers who followed them were ineffectual in controlling this menace.
Thuggery involved waylaying and robbing passengers and travelers who traveled from Delhi to Calcutta. It was confined basically to the North and central part of India. The thugs were organized gangs who carried out their activities in the name of the Goddess Kali who is often referred to as the 'dark mother' and the Hindu triple goddess representing creation, preservation and destruction. It is a fact of history that these gangs also carried out ritual killings with the purported aim of pleasing the Goddess Kali. Thus they made the entire operation a complete travesty of Hindu thought and ethos. It is estimated that these gangs killed upwards of 30,000 travelers. It will not be wrong to say that no organized cult of killers has ever murdered as many people as the Thugs of Central India.
The British who were in an expansion spree in India came across this cult in or around 1812. During this period the British discovered about 50 human bodies in a series of wells in the Ganges area. An examination of the bodies showed that all the victims had been done to death and robbed. The British also discovered that these cult members were hereditary. They also inculcated the art of killing in their kin right from childhood. The members of the gang normally carried out the killing by strangulation of the victims with a strong cloth noose which was tightened around the neck of their victims.
The British set about their task of eradicating this menace with a missionary zeal.. Thus in 1822, William Sleeman, an officer in the Bengal Army volunteered to be inducted into the civil service and was posted to central India by the then Governor General Lord Bentinck. He had a one point agenda to rid central India of the scourge of thuggery. Sleeman was the right man for the job as he was a master of 4 Indian dialects. However his task was very difficult as these bands of outlaws had local support and were also very secretive. However by visiting and studying the area and pattern of each crime he was able to learn about the gangs and their modus operandi. In addition Sleeman recruited a core of dedicated police personnel mostly Indians to help him. Between 1830 and 1841, Sleeman's police captured at least 3,700 Thugs, thus breaking forever the back of the infamous secret society for ever. Though 50 received an official pardon another 500 were hanged and the rest sentenced to life imprisonment. Thuggery was over and finished once for all.
Thus when we traverse the roads in central India we must thank God that the British came to India. We must also spare a thought for Sleeman for what he did. Away from his home in a far away land he did something that no Indian can forget- making India safe to travel.
