Tremolo Back

Don't think of the PRS SE Custom 24 as a "budget" guitar. Think of it as a great guitar for people on a budget.

Since the mid 1980's, PRS Guitars has earned a rightful reputation for their guitars, which are reputed for being great sounding, easy to to play, and, all too often, pretty expensive. Like most manufacturers, PRS has introduced a low-cost series of instruments to make the PRS brand more accessible to a broader group who might not otherwise be able to afford a PRS. This series, the Korean-made SE guitars, has been received very well.

The original PRS guitar was the Custom 24, and so it's only fitting that one of the best SE models is the SE Custom 24, a lower-priced version of the flagship guitar. It costs roughly a quarter of a "real" Custom 24, so how does it compare?

Features
Let's look at the construction, first. The PRS has a maple top (flame-maple veneer) and mahogany back.

It also comes standard with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. The 25" scale guitar has 24 frets, being modeled after the Custom 24. Nickel hardware is standard, as are the PRS designed tuners and tremolo bridge. The SE Custom 24 comes equipped with two zebra-styled pickups. The fretboard is equipped with moon inlays.

Performance
Our first impression of the SE Custom 24 was how amazing it felt and played, especially for a "budget" guitar. The wide-thin neck was smooth and easy to move around upon. It felt like any other PRS we've ever played, including those costing far more. It was easy to bend strings and sweep arpeggios like we were playing a $3,000 guitar.

The tremolo bridge had a real nice feel to it and didn't throw us out of tune much, though we did go out of tune with some intense whammy action. Unlike the higher end Custom 24, the SE model doesn't come with locking tuners, so those would likely go a long way toward improving tuning.

Ours came in a beautiful whale-blue finish, and though it's not a "real" flamed top, it was nevertheless truly gorgeous.

We were very impressed with the pickups and the wide range of tones available. This is a guitar you could use for rock, blues, jazz, or country without missing a beat. The pickups probably don't have the depth of its big brother, the Custom 24, but they were very good pickups in their own right and certainly don't necessitate running out to purchase replacement pickups.

The Bottom Line
Overall, we were very impressed with the PRS SE Custom 24. Don't think of this as a "budget" guitar. Think of it as a great guitar for people on a budget. With a street price of around $500, this guitar is definitely a keeper. Good job, Paul.

Gig-FX Pro-Chop Tremolo Guitar Effects Pedal $299 The Gig-FX Pro-Chop Tremolo Guitar Effect Pedal opens up a whole new world to guitarists and other musicians who want to produce repeatable and trancelike grooves or pulsating effects that are in perfect sync with any track.There are two ways to achieve this; one is by setting the frequency read out on the LCD to the chosen tempo. This allows for the first time ever a precise and repeatable tempo for a tremolo wave / chop / pan.The second is by syncing with any track / synth that has a MIDI clock available. By syncing with a given MIDI clock beat, the Pro-Chop effect pedal can allocate 1.2.3.4 or 8 chops / pans / tremolo waves allowing a wide variety of sound patterns. Whenever the device is turned on, it will be instantly in perfect sync.The output signal from the Pro-Chop tremolo pedal may be mono or stereo, but is infinitely more interesting in stereo.
