The Core Paradigm of Hypnosis
Hypnosis makes a distinction between states of the mind. There is the so called conscious state and the trance state. The implication is that during the conscious state the rational ego centric mind is in control, while during the trance state consciousness has been pushed aside and there is access to the pliant unconscious.
The view is held that the unconscious mind, the basic mind of the core personality is the one that determines and powers the individual. This is the engine that drives us. And it is a mind that is free of affectation, and rationalization. To the unconscious mind everything is real, every thing is seen in the light of actuality. This is the driving force of the unconscious mind. This is the driving force of the message behind every secret towards changing the conscious mind. Control the unconscious and you control the conscious. Program the unconscious and the conscious reaps the benefit.
The Art of Hypnosis
It is crucial that we understand the language, the attitude, the responses of the unconscious mind. This is what the art of hypnosis is all about. The words, the gestures, the tone of voice, the way you, the hypnotizer stands, the back story you create are all part of the arsenal of the hypnotist. And like any craftsman the good hypnotist has different tools in her tool chest for every situation. Here I the writer/hypnotist changed the personal sex reference within the sentence. This was done because it will cause the reader to stop for a brief moment and focus. Then when they start up reading again they will be paying more attention, closing out distractions, focusing on what I'm saying. They will be helping to put themselves deeper into a trance.
All of us have been entranced by a good book, a wonderful piece of music, a great entertainer. What about the runners high, or being in the zone. These are all manifestations of the conscious mind stepping aside and the unconscious taking over. And the reason we like this and trust this is that things seem to go better when the unconscious mind in these scenarios is operating. The runner in the zone seems to move effortlessly, the programmer in the zone seems to code more easily, the reader in the zone seems to live and learn more. Even our perception of time changes. Who hasn't heard the old saying, "Time flies when we're having fun". Free of the distractions of the conscious mind, we can do things more easily, with more skill and become better people.
Moral Implications
Like any tool hypnosis can be used for good or bad. Self-Improvement is obviously a good, but what of the use of these techniques in marketing, education, supporting a so called just cause. It is not enough to be informed it is crucial to know how you are being informed; how you are forming your opinions. Conversational hypnosis uses its tools to program the unconscious mind. And because these tools are used everywhere, from newspaper articles to speeches, from advertisements to political rallies, it is essential that people be aware of the techniques.
