Every aspiring guitarist arrives at a point in their musical journey where their attention turns to the electric guitar.
Long story short ... electric guitars come in two basic sizes king-size good and king size bad; so like everything else it pays to do your research before you front up to the salesperson at the music store.
This alluring instrument with all it's electronic attachments appears to be an exciting addition to the newbie's growing family of instruments and gadgets.
But where to start? Which electric guitar is best for you?
Here is a few basic pointers to help you avoid the traps of buying an electric guitar.
Basic styles: Despite the vast array of electric guitars available on the market today almost all electric guitars fall into four basic styles.
1. Strat (Stratocaster)
2. S.G
3. Les Paul
4. Tele (Telecaster)
The terms "Strat" and "Tele" refer to Fender's famous Stratocaster and Telecaster models. For those new to guitar playing, Fender is one of the two most popular brands of professional quality electric guitars; Gibson being the other.
Whereas, the terms "S.G" and "Les Paul" refer to two Gibson style guitars.
If you have already started doing some research you will know that electric guitar can be very expensive ranging from around $150 to $6,000 and beyond depending on how deep your pockets are!
Since we are currently discussing electric guitars ideally suited to the beginner; let's refine our search with that criteria in mind.
Top 3 quality brands are ...
1. Yamaha
2. Fender
3. Epiphone
I'll fine tune our research even more... here's the five most popular models of good quality instruments.
1. Yamaha (brand); Pacifica (model); strat (style) guitar
2. Fender Squier (brand/series); Fat strat(model); strat (style)
3. Fender Squier (brand/series); Affinity (model); tele (style)
4. Epiphone (brand); G-310SG (model); S.G (style)
5. Epiphone (brand); Les Paul (model); Les Paul (style)
Ultimately, it's totally up to you as to what band style of guitar that best suits your music, but for overall quality and value for money the Yamaha Pacifica is hard to beat.
Yamaha Pacifica.

Fender Telecaster $65.33 The Fender Telecaster, colloquially known as the Tele, is typically a dualpickup, solidbody electric guitar made by Fender. Its simple yet effective design and revolutionary sound broke ground and set trends in electric guitar manufacturing and popular music. Introduced for national distribution as the Broadcaster in the autumn of 1949, it was the first guitar of its kind to be produced on a substantial scale. Six Decades of Telecaster (Paperback) $35.19 This new version of Tony Bacon`s Six Decades of the Fender Telecaster shows how the world`s first commercially successful solidbody electric guitar still attracts musicians more than 60 years since its birth in California. Today, it is more popular than ever and for many guitarists has overtaken the Stratocaster as the Fender to own and play. The Tele is the longest-lived solidbody electric, played by everyone from Muddy Waters to Keith Richards, from Radiohead to Snow Patrol. Its sheer simplicity and versatility are vividly illustrated here through interviews with Jeff Beck, James Burton, Bill Kirchen, John 5, and more. The book is three great volumes in one: a compendium of luscious pictures of the most desirable Teles, a gripping story from the earliest days to the latest exploits, and a detailed collector`s guide to every Tele ever made. Packed with pictures of great players, collectable catalogs, period press ads, and cool memorabilia, The Telecaster Guitar Book is the one Tele book that all guitar fans will want to add to their collection. |
