Warning: This is not about another British band.

There is this guy named Stephen Duffy. He is from Birmingham, England. He is a singer/songwriter who had early pop success in the states with a Top 10 single called Kiss Me. He went on as a solo performer under different alias's including Tin Tin, Dr. Calculus, The Lilac Time, The Devils and even once called himself Duran Duran. As as a childhood friend of both John Taylor and Nick Rhodes, the three lads had stars in their eyes. Since things weren't progressing as quickly as Duffy wanted, he quit Duran Duran at age 16 and formed another group called The Hawks. Needless to say John and Nick didn't starve. But I digress, so more recently Duffy has produced and written albums with Robbie Williams and collaborated with The Barenaked Ladies. All in all he has written, produced and performed on over 20 albums where he was the driving force. Although he hasn't found mainstream success here in the states since Kiss Me, he is an extremely talented singer, songwriter and producer. If you are not familiar with his work, start out with any one of his albums by his band The Lilac Time. The bands early British folk style will bring you into his world of heartfelt and beautiful compositions that would make Donovan proud. But the following isn't about Stephen Duffy nor is it about another British band. Instead this is a review of an American band whose roots lay somewhere between Portland, Oregon and Birmingham, England.

There is this guy Colin Meloy who is the front man for a band called The Decemberists. Sounding reminiscent of The Lilac Time, The Decembrists latest achievement is a pure delight. I use the word achievement since this is not their first album and by no means is it their last. It took four-story like studio albums to finally create the concept record known as The Hazards of Love. For all intensive purposes, this is a Rock Opera (ie: Tommy, The Wall). At first listen I was astounded by what I heard when I found myself immersed in a wall of synths found on the title track called Prelude. It was not hard to hear the intro synths heard on Elton John's classic song Funeral For Friend as an influence for this piece.

Colin Meloy establishes himself as a modern-day folk singer. His sing-song writing style and raspy sounding folksy vocal tone is memorizing. Meloys melodies along with the band bring us into a mystical world where we hear everything from beautiful finger picked guitars being accompanied by heavy metal Hendrix style guitar playing. Nowhere on the CD does an instrument outshine one another. To complete this "score like" sounding album we are treated to the sounds of accordions, pipe organs, a harpsichord, female choir voices, cellos and violins. You can even hear a scream sounding like it was placed between tracks 2 and 3 as a tribute to Pink Floyd's the Wall. Simply put The Hazards of Love is a sonic masterpiece.

After some research, I found a press release that said this album began when Meloy became fascinated by the British folk revival of the 1960's. With The Hazards of Love we hear all songs contributing to a unified narrative with recurring stories as heard on the bands earlier works. The plot is essentially a psychedelic love story whose cast includes an ensemble of recurring characters bringing conflict to the albums story-arc. Man do I love listening to this CD!

The Hazards of Love is the real deal. I haven't heard anything this original and lush in years. If you are a fan of Death Cab for Cutie, Donovan, The Lilac Time, the score from A Clockwork Orange or pure British Psychedelic Stoner Metal, it's all here on this brilliant release.
