Building of the Institute of Biology of Southern Seas is situated in the centre of Sevastopol. Sevastopol is a big town in the south of Ukraine. It is located near the Black Sea. Sevastopol Marine Aquarium and Museum is located on the lower floor of the Institute of Biology of Southern Seas. This is one of the oldest aquariums in the world and the only marine aquarium in the Ukraine.
A special building for the Sevastopol Biological Station was built in 1897. There and opened Russia's first demonstration of marine aquarium of animals. Later the building was repeatedly expanded and reconstructed. Aquarium of the Institute of Biology of Southern Seas in Sevastopol is the largest in the Crimea and Ukraine. Central pool in the indoor room has a diameter of 9,2 m and 1,5 m deep and the walls of aquariums has the height of 1,1 m and the volume up to 7 m sq..
Central basin and wall aquariums filled with sea water. Water enters the bay in the underground sump and then into the pool. At any time, visitors can see in the aquarium of Sevastopol several dozen species of Black Sea animals and plants. Currently, the Aquarium presents more than 180 species of animals. The aquarium assembled an extensive collection of live tropical fish that live among the coral reefs. Also, there are also well-known freshwater fishes: the famous piranha and their close relatives, large innocent black pacu, predatory Arawana called dragon Amazon, and the unusual shape of fish-knives. But what is truly unique in the Sevastopol Aquarium is a collection of Black Sea fish, beluga, sturgeon, stingray, mackerel, blue fish, sultan, striped bass, flounder, eel and others.
