About to take online guitar lessons, video guitar lessons, or some other variety and need a guitar? Where does one start? There are many factors that go into choosing an instrument. Are you a beginner? Are you choosing for your child, or are you a more advanced player that is looking to get a second instrument? These questions all have differing answers. Let's start with the first one, choosing a guitar as a beginning student.
There are some common denominators amongst all of the above questions when it comes to choosing a guitar. As a beginning guitar student taking online guitar lessons, or in-person lessons, playability is important. Acoustic guitars and electric guitars both have certain advantages and disadvantages over each other. Acoustic guitars need no amplification to play. They can be taken with you on trips rather easily and offer warm rich tones. There are two basic types of acoustics. The standard steel string, and the classical nylon string type. Classical guitars can be identified by the head of the guitar. This is where the tuning pegs are located. On a classical guitar, the head is "open" or rather has slats. On a standard acoustic, the head is solid and the pegs stick upward ninety degrees to the body of the guitar. Secondly the neck is noticeably wider than a standard, plus the strings are nylon, and move around a lot easier than steel strings. Unless you are an aspiring classical guitarist, I do not recommend this type of acoustic guitar for a beginner. You will be better served with a standard steel string type. Of course acoustic guitars have much thicker strings than an electric guitar and can be a little more difficult to learn on. If you choose to go the electric guitar route you will need an amplifier. There are a lot of "starter packages" out there, like the Fender Squire package that comes with a small amplifier. These are generally ok, but as you get better you will want to upgrade. A number of factors come into play when it comes to quality in an electric guitar. The top electrics are neck-through-body, another words, the neck is not bolted on. These instruments have better intonation (even string vibration), better sustain, and better tone. Of course they are also the most expensive as well, going from $1200 to thousands of dollars more. However, there are plenty of good electrics out there with less than perfect pickups, and bolt on necks. If you are taking online guitar lessons, video guitar lessons, or person-to-person lessons, ask your teacher for help in choosing a good instrument that's within your budget.
If you are buying a guitar for your child to learn on, I would not recommend buying a cheap acoustic. They are hard to play and keep in tune, and your child will grow frustrated. Personally, I would recommend one of the starter packages, like the one mentioned earlier. The guitar is easier to play, solid-bodied, and easier to keep in tune. If he or she is taking online guitar lessons, video guitar lessons, or in-person lessons, these instruments will serve them well.
What about an advanced player wanting a second guitar? Well, budget is where it all starts. One rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for. You have to ask yourself what purpose the second guitar will serve, whether you should go with passive or active electronics, Tremolo Bridge or fixed and then find the best fit based on your budget. Obviously if you are surfing the many video guitar lessons on the net, or taking online guitar lessons, or studying with a teacher person-to-person, the music you enjoy playing will have an impact on what you choose instrument wise. A guitarist heavy into metal will not go out and buy a Fender Telecaster with passive electronics, and by the same token, a guy into country will not go out and pick a Jackson Rhodes model with active EMG's in it.
Of course always refer to your teacher if you have one. If you don't and are looking to enhance those chops, consider online guitar lessons, or scour the net for the many video guitar lessons out there. One of the premier and most reputable sites out there, that offers guitar lessons online, can be found at http://www.cyberguitarman.com.
