During a road trip north from Whistler, I had a great opportunity to watch and contemplate the overtaking behaviour of many of my fellow motorists. My philosophy on passing is that I'll get ahead of any slow-moving vehicles, but the main reason to overtake is to find a nice empty stretch of road. With fewer vehicles in the immediate vicinity, key variables are taken out of the equation. This, by the way, is the tactic that is taught in better advanced driving schools.
Overtaking to find space becomes necessary given the herd nature that often operates in traffic. Packs of automobiles travel in close proximity, no one making a move, seemingly zoned out and on mental cruise control. When you manage to get past this rolling roadblock, it is not unusual to trigger another group behaviour. Suddenly, half the bunch realises they want to pass too. Perhaps one of these drivers will charge up and re-pass you, but invariably their enthusiasm will wear off, they"ll slow down, and you will have to get by them again.
There are other common tendencies worth noting. Some motorists seem to have a deep-seated psychological aversion to being passed. Whether consciously or not, they will speed up, making the job more difficult. In this case, if things are getting dangerous, I'll simply bail out. Passing areas don't last forever, and I don't need the excitement. If the way is clear, I might just let the turbocharger do its job, even if it means an illegal speed. The trick is to get far enough away from this individual to break the invisible bond that would otherwise have the other vehicle on your bumper for a while. It is the lesser of two evils, and unfortunate that these situations occur at all.
I do not get involved in team passing, following another vehicle through an overtaking manoeuvre. The risk goes up exponentially, since whatever happens to that driver becomes your problem and vice-versa. Most of the time it all works out fine, but it tweaks my "what if" radar in a big way.
It is important to scan ahead for side roads. If they are shielded by trees or shrubbery, there is no way of knowing whether a driver is going to join the main road, having only checked to the left to make sure their own lane is clear. Not long ago, in Europe, I saw a fellow in a Mini Cooper avoid death by millimetres when someone pulled out of a side road in that fashion. It was only the compact size of the Mini that saved him, and the vehicles got through three abreast.
On the race track, passing is rarely spontaneous. A lot of planning is involved. It may take several laps before you get your strategy worked out. During this time, you are trying to put pressure on the other driver, showing the nose of your car on one side, then the other, staying close. Leave that second bit out of your tactics on public roads, unless you really like hospitals and body shops. Part one applies, because a major flaw, in these days of distraction, is failure to plan properly. Half way down an overtaking zone, the driver suddenly realises he or she wanted to pass, and the whole thing is done with big power, drama, too much fuel use, and unnecessary risk.
The correct way to overtake is to hang back, not close up on the vehicle in front. You want the best possible view ahead, and this will not happen with tailgating. Besides, from that position you cannot start accelerating until you are in the other lane. By holding back, acceleration can begin in your own lane, up to the decision making point. This is where you choose whether to continue. It is the equivalent of the point on a runway where a pilot can still abort the take-off. If you are going ahead, a nice smooth transition gets your vehicle into the opposite lane, with enough speed in hand to easily get by. Leave enough room, move smoothly back, and there you have it, a good clean pass.
Bear in mind that if problems occur, most of the time brakes are a better answer than power. No road-going vehicle I can think of accelerate better than it stops. This is, of course, one more reason not to get involved in team overtaking.
Planning a nice tidy overtaking manoeuvre means you're driving efficiently, no hostility is created with other motorists, and everyone gets to enjoy the drive at their chosen speed.

It is only the first of a serial killer's grisly crimes, however, and Delmonico is plunged into his most perplexing and terrifying case. All the victims looked alike. A frightening pattern emerges as the violence escalates, and Delmonico senses the killer is among the institute's staff of scientists and doctors. Infiltrating their ranks, he gets closer to manager Desdemona Dupre, who can help him uncover the secrets, politics, and backstabbing ambitions harbored there. All is not what it seems. On Off $5.99 It is 1965, and in Holloman, Connecticut, someone is preying on the innocent. At a prestigious research center for the neurosciences, fondly known by its staff as the "Hug", parts of a mutilated body are discovered. Then another body is found and the medical staff become prime suspects . . . With the Hug's hierarchies of power in turmoil and every member of its staff hiding something, Delmonico delves into the lives and pasts of each and every employee. It is the case of his career, and he is determined to solve it. But how do you find a monster who leaves no clues and is always two steps ahead? |

Off $16.34 An ordinary working man (Michael) suffering from severe mid-life crisis, begins having fevers and a disoriented perception of reality. These symptoms manifest into frightening visions of a personal nature, resulting in gruesome physical consequences. The threat, however, does not end with him. Michael comes to realize that he is an integral part of a disease of the psyche, which is on the verge of infecting the world. The final conflict between the thread of sanity his soul hangs from, and the all-consuming madness pursuing him, occurs in a place called the Eternal City (which seethes in all its repulsive splendor in the Southern California desert) or perhaps, in the suspiciously warm, genetically altered blood screaming through his veins. |
