Shivering and shaking of dogs are signs of disease, injury, infection and medical conditions. Small dog breeds including Jack Russell terriers tend to shake as if they feel cold or nervous even in normal condition. As pet owner, it is upsetting to see such an energetic dog shivering and shaking at your feet, but you just can't do anything but to wait for those tiny limbs to stop trembling.
It is indeed informative to know what could be the probable reasons of Jack Russell shaking episode.
One of the top reasons why this shaking episode takes place is a condition better known as low blood sugar or Hypoglycemia. Low blood glucose level turns physically active dogs to weak and shaky. Hunger is one powerful root cause of Hypoglycemia, and it's likely your dog has not been eaten for quite some time now. It is also possible that he's been dealing with digestive upset preventing him to eat more than what is necessary.
Hypoglycemia often affects small dog breeds because their small body mass makes it difficult to store blood sugar properly. If your dog is affected by this condition, providing basic sugar source like honey or maple syrup can help fix the problem. Rub some honey to dog's gums to stop shaking episode within 15-20 minutes. In addition, maple syrup and honey also help your dog gain his appetite, as long as this source of sugar will be given to him every six hours.
Shaking is also a body's defensive mechanism towards cold temperature. Small dog breeds tend to feel cold much easier because their body cannot store too much body fat. You must provide your dog with warm and protective clothing to reduce shaking. After giving him a bath, make sure to cover his shaking body with comfortable towel to restore normal body temperature. His coat must dry up fast therefore good exposure to sunlight or using blow dry must be done accordingly.
The White Shaker Syndrome is a strange reason of Jack Russell shaking episode. It is a condition common to dogs with small breed and white coat. There is no clear explanation regarding this condition but it is observed and experienced by many that affected dogs usually have shaking episode when faced with strong emotions such as excitement, fear and stress.
Since Jack Russell Terriers are active and energetic dogs, shaking is believed to be an outlet to vent their locked up energy. They actually need to engage themselves to vigorously fun activities to release that tremendously high energy level. Jack Russells who can't do such will eventually resort to digging or excessive barking.
Intake of toxins, pain and seizure activity may also cause your dog to shake.
Jack Russell shaking episodes have various reasons so you really have to observe your pet and do not jump into conclusions. Consult your veterinarian to clearly point out what causes you dog's shaking episode.
