Celtic Theme Chess set pieces are based on the old Celts. Its origin goes back to around 1014 AD. The dress and weapons appear with high accuracy in the Celtic Chess Set figures. For their large and heavy weapons the lightly clad and active Celtic footmen were once distinguished. For the hit and run tactics the Celts had the mastery.
Sea raiding Norsemen also known as Vikings play on the dark side of the theme chess set. The names of the Vikings were associated with raids of the European shores, especially France, Ireland, Italy and France. It was impossible to guess where they strike next and therefore such raiders were known as sea wolves. This theme battle chess set is truly exciting since it contains all details while the costumes and figures maintain historical accuracy.
The people of Celtic origin inhabited the Western Europe, especially Wales, Ireland, the Scottish highland, and Brittany. Raids by the Vikings or Norsemen they fell prey to and this chess set projects the story of the battle between the Viking invaders and Brian Boru, the Irish king. At Clontarf, close to Dublin, the battle occurred and it was a fierce encounter indeed.
Even though the Celts somehow or other succeeded in defeating the Viking invaders, Brian Boru, their king was killed. The main characters connected with the battle are featured in the set while Celtic designs and art objects of that time are projected therein.
The Celtic inhabitants of Ireland stood up about one thousand years back to resist the invading and colonizing Vikings under the leadership of Brian Boru, their king. In these fine chess set pieces the expertness and craftsmanship of the Celtic tribes were reflected through the artistic and rare designs appreciated all over the world.
The two sides of the famous battle of Clontarf, close to Dublin in Ireland, of 1014 AD get reflection in Antique Finish pieces nicely. The Irish Celtic tribes united under their High King, Brian Boru, are represented by the white pieces the Viking forces commanded by Sihtrik Silkbeard, the king of Dublin, are the black pieces. Generally the pieces are awful fighters though the Black Rook is a notable exception appearing in the shape of the prow of a longboat of the Vikings.

Both Sides Now $60 This is the untold story of a generation that experienced one of the most extraordinary chapters in our nation's historyschool desegregation. Many have attempted to define desegregation, which peaked in the late 1970s, as either a success or a failure; surprisingly few have examined the experiences of the students who lived though it. Featuring the voices of blacks, whites, and Latinos who graduated in 1980 from racially diverse schools, Both Sides Now offers a powerful firsthand account of how desegregation affected studentsduring high school and later in life. Their stories, set in a rich social and historical context, underscore the manifold benefits of school desegregation while providing an essential perspective on the current backlash against it. |

B-Sides (1996-2006) $14.99 Following 2003's Covers and 2004's hits collection Once More with Feeling, Euro-American trio Placebo's back catalog is raided yet again on this rather comprehensive compilation of the B-sides recorded during their ten-year spell with Virgin Records. Starting with their faithful cover version of Syd Barrett's "Dark Globe" (from the 1996 single "36 Degrees") and finishing with the orchestral mini-rock opera of "Lazarus" (from the 2006 single "Meds"), this chronologically compiled release features 25 of the tracks (plus three other compositions) that appeared on their mammoth ten-disc The Hut Recordings box set, allowing the more casual fan access to their trove of undiscovered songs. Using the concept of the B-side to experiment with their sound, there are several instrumentals that wildly deviate from their trademark angst-rock, such as the claustrophobic Massive Attack-esque trip-hop of "Ion," the improvisational avant-garde jazz of "Aardvark" (which sees Brian Molko unexpectedly pick up the sax), and the appropriately titled Prodigy-style electroclash of "Dub Psychosis," while the eerie electronica of "Leeloo" and steel guitar-laden atmospherics of "The Innocence of the Sleep" suggest that a future scoring David Lynch-esque films isn't out of the question. On the vocal tracks, there are attempts at Chemical Brothers-ish big beat on "Uneedmemorethanineedu," which renders Molko's distinct vocals unrecognizable thanks to its low-pitch distortion, ethereal Americana on "Bubblegun," and melancholic post-rock on "Drink You Pretty," while Placebo display both their acoustic sensibilities on the stripped-back "Then the Clouds Will Open for Me" and "Eyesight to the Blind" and their unique sense of humor on the risqu? Gallic lounge-pop of "Mars Landing Party" and the alternative James Bond theme "Miss Moneypenny." The sheer amount of songs on B-Sides (1996-2006) may be a little too overwhelming for anyone other than hardcore fans, but overall, it's a hugely inventive if slightly inconsistent affair that is well worth persevering with. ~ Jon O'Brien |

Taking Sides - (Ws) $24.99 Set in Germany in 1946, Taking Sides tells the story of the investigation of Wilhelm Furtw?ngler (Stellan Skarsg?rd), the renowned conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras, by the American occupying army. Major Steve Arnold (Harvey Keitel) has been told by his superiors that they want Furtw?ngler convicted of being a willing participant in the crimes of the Hitler regime, by virtue of his supposed support for and support from the Hitler government. They haven't got the time or resources to go after every ex-Nazi, so they want Furtw?ngler, as the biggest cultural target they can hit. Arnold does his loud, boorish best to first humiliate and then attack the conductor over the supposed favoritism that he was shown by Hitler, Goering, Himmler, et al. and his conducting of a concert at the 1934 Nuremberg rally and at Hitler's 53rd birthday. Arnold finds, to his eventual distress but not dissuasion, that nothing is as simple as he would like to make it. His civilian secretary, Emmi Straube (Birgit Minichmayr), a concentration camp survivor whose father was part of the German Army plot to kill Hitler, and Lt. David Wills (Moritz Bleibtreu), a German-born Jew representing the War Crimes Tribunal, keep trying to remind Arnold that life and politics in Germany only deteriorated gradually after 1933, and in ways that couldn't always be anticipated by those who were there. Germans who chose not to leave weren't necessarily casting their lot with Hitler, but with protecting what was decent or even great about Germany, including her orchestras and music. Arnold knows nothing about music and even less about Germany and her people, and won't be deterred from his goal. Wills and Straube wish to resign from working with him, until they realize that they're facing the same choice that Furtw?ngler faced -- to leave a horrendous situation and have no way of affecting its conduct or outcome, or remain and do their best to stand up for decency and truth. In the process of doing that, they find out that Furtw?ngler is not only a great artist -- which they knew already -- but a great and brave man, who also has his flaws. The latter include an outsized ego that may have caused him to participate a little too willingly at times in the dangerous game he played of maintaining the excellence of Germany's musical institutions while protecting them (and also many musicians) from the worst ravages of the Nazi regime, at the same time also keeping lesser, more compliant figures from usurping his control. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi |

Both Sides of the Veil $25.94 In "Staunton's Dinner," Vane Staunton returns after an absence of many years and hosts a dinner for his former friends. But they are horrified to find that he is terribly changed and now appears to possess awful powers, including the power to kill a man with only a thought In the curiously homoerotic "A Knight of the Road," set in 17th century England, a handsome but cold-blooded stranger shows up in a lonely village and just might be the Devil himself The darkly comical "The Disappearance of Mrs. Macrecham" recounts the strange adventures of Hereward Waller, who finds himself in an awkward predicament when he believes he has turned his landlady into a cat. And in "The Ring," Pugh and Tress from Marsh's earlier collection "Curios" reprise their roles as they seek to solve the mystery of an apparently cursed 16th century ring. The twelve stories in this volume showcase Marsh's diverse talents and include tales of ghosts, crime, and the occult. As always, the tales are told with Marsh's characteristic blend of horror, mystery, and humour. This edition includes the unabridged text of Marsh's story collection, taken from the exceedingly rare first edition published by Methuen in 1901. Also featured is a reproduction of the original cover. |

Competition Policy on Both Sides of the Atlantic $132.24 During the last decade there has been serious change in the global constellations of the economy and hence chances and possibilities of capital concentration and merging opportunities. Will the markets regulate the competition issue i.e. keep the equilibrium or there is need for intervention through Competition Policy? Or maybe, the dynamism of tomorrows economy gives sudden/automatic solution to the competition problems? The high profile merger cases have boosted the debate which will tend to expand its reach in the fields of economics and econometrics versus political interests. Three crucial cases were analyzed. In the first case, WorldCom/MCI, both the US Department of Justice and the European Commission concluded that there has to be a divesture. The second case, Boeing/McDonnell Douglas raised the tensions over the two Atlantic antitrust axes. Nonetheless, it was resolved after strong political pressures undertaken by both sides. The third case, General Electric/Honeywell set the foundations of firm disagreement and urged for much needed reform of the EU legislation and the Merger Regulation, which was introduced after all. Blues for Dootsie: The Blue and Dootone Sides $17.99 Veteran West Coast horn man Walter "Dootsie" Williams founded Blue Records in 1949, originally to release the raunchy "blue" songs of comedian Billy Mitchell (the first of these, "Song of the Woodpecker," was fairly representative), and over the next two years Williams released some 34 singles on Blue, roughly half of them blues or R&B. Williams folded Blue in 1951, then changed the name of his label to Dootone and began to pursue a more pop direction, although he continued to issue blues and R&B-related material. By 1955, when he changed the name of the label to Dooto for legal reasons, Williams was dealing almost exclusively with doo wop performers. In 1956 he set up Authentic Records to handle his blues issues, but by 1958 he was all but done with the music business, settling back into comedy production, releasing albums by comedian Redd Foxx and others. This generous 30-track, 75-minute collection gathers up some of the more notable blues and R&B sides that Williams released on his Blue and Dootone imprints, and while there is some intriguing stuff here like Johnny Taylor's slow and elegant "Back Alley Blues," Fats Gaines' generic but effective "Katy Lee," Bumps Myers' funky "I'm Clappin' and Shoutin'," and a pair of rough-and-ragged Stormy Herman tracks ("The Jitterbug," "Cadillac Fever"), most of it is fairly ordinary stuff, making Blues for Dootsie an archival treasure but not necessarily a musical one. Collectors will love it, but casual listeners may find that it strikes the same note and tone over and over again. ~ Steve Leggett |

Merce Cunningham Dance Company: Split Sides - $34.99 Modernist choreographer Merce Cunningham broke new ground in dance by devising innovative methods of staging sequences. One of his most unique methods involved the employment of "chance procedures" to determine which movements to interpolate within a particular dance. This peaked (and grew most radical) with Cunningham's authorship of the 2003 "Split Sides." The piece itself is divided into two twenty-minute movements. In each movement, two different options exist for set design, two for costumes, two for music, two for lighting and two choreography, meaning that the final product can emerge in a multitude of ways. Cunningham devises the particular combinations seen here with several on camera dice rolls prior to each movement. A filmed record of four versions of "Split Sides" appears in this release. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |
