One of the first mods that anybody makes to their guitar is to change the pickups. This can be for various reasons, it maybe that you bought a cheap lower model guitar, your after a specific tone or you've heard some famous rock god plays a particular brand and you want them.
In my opinion most cheap guitars come with cheap Chinese nonsense pickups, that's because they are cheap nonsense crap guitars and don't deserve anything else. The other materials used are often poor quality, cheap hardware, cheap wood, bad paint and bad electronics. My recommendation would be to move on, play what you have now, improve your playing and then buy yourself a better guitar. If you drop in some signature Dimarzio Eddie van Halen pickups that cost you $400 its going to be money wasted, your not going to sound like him so don't bother.
Don't get me wrong changing your pickups can improve your tone but if your guitar is crap its always going to be crap. But even so if you really are looking to change your pick ups, good cheap brands like Wilkinson Pickups make fairly good low end products you can find these here or other brands second hand on eBay fairly cheaply!
The tone quest
First thing to do would be to make sure your guitar is set-up properly, check your pickup height, intonation and string action these can all effect your judgement on tone and your guitars playability. If these are all set-up right and you still want to improve your tone and feel the instrument is worth the effort and money then there are numerous pickups available. The best brand, hands down is Seymour Duncan, he's been making the best pickups for ages and started by himself using his record player as a wire winder. His products have grown and most of the recording guitarists world wide use his products. They range from $60-400 a set so can be pricey but they are unbelievable quality.
In my opinion its always a battle trying to find that perfect tone and often you where happiest with the one you started with or the tone your trying to emulate was played with a $15,000 guitar rig that your never likely to afford. But that eternal search for tone is quest that many guitarists make, some succeed some fail. Today people are investing more and more into hand wound pickups made by specialists like Stan Hinesley in the USA who has been making hand wound pickups since 2004 to rave reviews and in the UK Bare Knuckle Pickups have been receiving amazing reviews. People claim that hand wound pickups create a warm fluid tone that machine wound pickups can not recreate.
