"Breakcore" is a genre of music that defies nearly any attempt to define it. While some breakcore artists produce highly complex and pounding post-industrial beats, others mix heavy metal guitar riffs, jazz melodies, reggae vocals or all of the above to create a "mash-up" of seemingly incongruent musical styles. Perhaps the only thing holding breakcore together as a genre of music is the ever-present DIY mentality of breakcore musicians and fans alike.
As was the case with IDM (intelligent dance music), breakcore came about as a protest against mainstream rave and techno scenes of the early 1990s. In a way, breakcore was a political statement against the "accessible" music of rave culture. Breakcore was meant to be rough and aggressive, not suitable for run-of-the-mill "techno club kids."
Alec Empire's 1994 EP "The Destroyer" is considered an important milestone in the early history of breakcore. The record label "Digital Hardcore Recordings," founded by Alec Empire and fellow members of Atari Teenage Riot, went on to release bands of the fledgling "Digital Hardcore" scene. Other important labels of the time included Ambush Records and Planet Mu (Planet µ), both based in the United Kingdom, which also released work by many early breakcore musicians and contributed greatly to the genre's development.
As breakcore artists can vary wildly in terms of musical styles from one another, the music equipment they use is also often vastly different. Common gear ranges from trackers such as Renoise to analog synthesizers and drum machines to state-of-the-art effects processors. Some examples of popular gear used by breakcore artists are the Korg Kaoss Pad, Ableton Live, Apple Logic, the Roland TR-606 Drumatix and the Novation BassStation.
The so-called "Amen break," a 5.2 second long drum loop from the 1969 song "Amen, Brother" by the band "The Winstons" is often used by breakcore musicians. The original song was played at approximately 135 BPM, though when it is sampled by breakcore artists, they often increase the tempo to 170 BPM or more. This loop, which may be mixed with sampled kick drums produced by gear such as the Roland TR-909, forms the basic drum track of many breakcore songs.
By the end of the 20th century, breakcore had grown in popularity around the world and already enjoyed a substantial following in Europe and North America, with breakcore events taking place on a regular basis around Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Recently, artists such as Venetian Snares and Kid606 have achieved near-mainstream success, bringing breakcore to large audiences around the world. Other successful artists and bands in the breakcore scene include The Flashbulb, Atari Teenage Riot and Alec Empire.

Among gear lists from hundreds of alternative electronic musicians, you can also find a page devoted especially to breakcore bands at Alternative Electronics.
