Did you not know it is possible to travel on a cargo ship? Yes, not a problem we can arrange it for you. If you want to reduce your carbon footprints, or if you despise flying or if you are the enquisitive type of person then freighter voyages are right for you. Freighter travel is a very flexible form of travel. Freighter travel averages of about EURO 1OO per person per day and the fare is calculated by the number of days on board and includes all meals and the accommodation.
There are age limits, as there is no doctor on board and passengers are advised they need to be mobile and fit to travel.
General information about Freighter SHIPS
Since the 1960s the transport of containers has continued to grow. A cargo ship or freighter is any type of vessel that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. Thousands of freighter carriers sail on the High Seas each day/month and year; they handle the bulk of the International trade. Usually they are specially designed for the task, being equipped with cranes and other mechanisms to load and unload, and come in all sizes. They are almost always built of welded steel, and with some exceptions generally have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years before being scrapped.
Container vessels have grown in size from a capacity of 1500 TEU (Twenty feet equivalent unit) in 1966 to approximately 13300 TEU until 2008. The possible cargo is containers (dry, liquid and reefer containers)
Characteristics of the Container Carriers are:
- Maximum amount of TEUs or FEUs (Forty feet equivalent unit)
- Amount of TEUs and FEUs below the weather deck along with their heights.
- Number of container tiers
- Presence of cargo gear
- Open or closed ship.
Container vessels are also classified on the basis of the passage criteria:
- Panamax ships. Ships with a width less than 32.3 meters. They have the maximum width with which they can still pass the locks in the Panama Canal.
- Post Panamax Ships. These ships are too large to pass through the Panama canal. Since 1988 container vessels have been built with widths exceeding 32.3 meters.
- Suezmax ships have maximum draft of 19 meters, which allows them to use the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal is currently being deepened, which means that the Suez-Max size will be larger in future.
Container feeders are small or medium sized vessels starting at 200 TEUs. They are specialized in the transport of containers from small ports, the feeder ports, to large ports or main ports and vice versa or for use in services which are not profitable for the larger container vessels. The feeders are sometimes equipped with cargo gear. Often, multipurpose ships are employed as container feeders.
Roll-on/Roll-off vessels:
They facilitate the transport of mobile cargo. Ro-Ro vessels have continuous decks over the entire length of the ship.
Refrigerated ships (Reefers) are ships which have refrigerated holds to transport fruit or vegetables or other frozen cargo. Modern reefers increasingly carry cargo in containers rather than on pallets. They have a built in refrigerated system, which can be plugged in to the ships electricity system.
Multipurpose ships can carry many types of cargo - containers, general cargo, dry bulk cargo such as grain, cars, heavy items. They are divided into ships with cargo gear or without cargo gear or coastal liners. A multipurpose vessel can also be provided with one or more ramps on the side of the ship. Loading and discharging can be carried out over these ramps by forklifts which is a faster way and less dependent on the weather conditions.
Bulk Carriers are specially designed ships that carry loose cargo in bulks. There are three types of bulk carriers:
- Handy size - approximately 30,000 tons deadweight often with their own cargo gear. Carry usually precious ore, sand, scrap, clay, grain or forest products
- Panamax, approximately 80,000 tons deadweight seldom carry gear, Cargo is mainly ore or grain.
- Capesize are approximately 160,000 tons deadweight or over with no cargo gear. Cargo ore, coal, etc...

Rattlin, the Reefer $30.19 If you like the novels of Frederick Marryat youll love Edward Howards Rattlin, the Reefer. Rattlin, the Reefer was edited by Frederick Marryat for his friend and fellow captain Edward Howard. For several generations, however, people thought it was actually written by Marryat because it was that good. Like many of Marryats books, this book is thought to be autobiographical; although this was never specifically confirmed by Captain Howard himself. However, from the main characters early schooling, to his life as a midshipman, to his experiences aboard ship, there is nothing in this book that could not have happened to a young man in the early 1800s. As such it gives us a wonderful insight into that period. Ralph Rattlin tells his life story with a kind of offhand humor that is truly engaging. The storys accuracy to nautical detail is totalit could hardly be otherwise with someone like Frederick Marryat as the editorand the scenes are crisp and vivid. While almost unknown to modern audiences, Edward Howards writing has been favorably compared to that of Tobias Smollett and Herman Melville. If you enjoy those writersand especially if you love the works of Frederick Marryatyoull love Edward Howards Rattlin, the Reefer Author: Howard, Edward/ Marryat, Frederick Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 388 Publication Date: 2008/05/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.86 inches |

Reefer Madness - $14.99 This unabashed propaganda film (also known by the title Tell Your Children, a dead giveaway) has become a cult classic of comically bad cinema due to its dated, alarmist views on the dangers of "marijuana addiction" and the exaggerated symptoms thereof. After the onscreen prologue that declares "Something must be done to wipe out this ghastly menace," Reefer Madness launches into a case study of clean-cut WASP couple Bill (Kenneth Craig) and Mary (Dorothy Short), high schoolers who play tennis and drink tea on the back porch. Their friend Jimmy (Warren McCollum) introduces them to a pot dealer named Jack (Carleton Young), who invites Bill up to his den of inequity, where stoned ne'er-do-wells laugh fiendishly, dance, and play the piano. After one joint, Bill is hooked, and his life begins to plummet down the tubes -- he starts flunking school and becomes a promiscuous regular in Jack's apartment. When a worried Mary tracks Bill down, she too is given a joint and begins giggling uncontrollably while being aggressively fondled by the bizarre addict Ralph (Dave "Tex" O'Brien). When Bill bursts out of the bedroom to tangle with Ralph, hallucinating and blacking out, Mary is accidentally shot. This prompts a string of guilt and calamitous occurrences, including several more deaths and courtroom sentences to mental institutions, all because of the devil weed. The film ends with the ominous warning, "The dread marijuana may be reaching forth next for your son or daughter...or yours...or YOURS!" ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi |

RiffTrax Reefer Madness $5.83 Rated: NRSynopsis: For years, Hollywood has extolled the TV watching and excessive Funyun consumption that accompany heavy marijuana smoking as lighthearted fun. But in the 1930s, one film was brave enough to tell it like it is: Reefer Madness. Crime, deceit, murder, casual sex and ragtime piano are all shown as inevitable consequences of that first puff of Reefer. This story is told through the riveting medium of forty year old actors portraying high schoolers, interrupted every fifteen minutes for a stern lecture from a hideous, bespectacled man. |
