Cast: Marcus Carl Franklin, Ben Whishaw, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Cate Blanchett
Directed by: Todd Haynes
The opening credits of this hallucinatory vision say: 'Inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan'. It doesn't attempt to decipher the enigma of Bob Dylan. Instead it takes us on a elliptical, exhilarating riddle of a journey. It leaves us breathless. It embraces with open arms this icon of a generation and a time, along with all his myths and paradoxes.
Director Todd Haynes rightly perceives that it doesn't really matter who or what Dylan really was. As an artist, he doesn't owe us anything but his songs, distilling and chronicling American society and culture. Dylan's music pervades each and every inch of this movie, always hovering like a phantom in the background...sometimes taking over the stage and driving the inter-cutting, entangled storylines. Six supremely talented actors get into six different personas of Bob Dylan, presenting a kaleidoscope of color and music, a partial picture but an enthralling panorama.
First appears the 'fake'... Marcus Carl Franklin, a 12-year-old boy posing as a Woodie Guthrie. He jumps onto a train running through the American pastoral lands, with his guitar. He wisecracks and shares tall tales with two hobos, his co-passengers in the boxcar.
Next is a gaunt-looking Ben Whishaw as Arthur Rimabud, the 'poet'. He is facing a jury questioning his decision to quit writing poetry at the age of nineteen.
Christian Bale appears on screen as Jack Rollins, the 'prophet', the fiery and intense Troubadour of conscience, who could churn out insightful 'fingerpoint' songs like tickertape. He disappears into seeming oblivion, when he loses his conviction that you can bring about change with a song.
Julianne Moore plays Alice, Fabian, a thinly veiled version of the folk-singer, Joan Baez. She can't help but express her affection and admiration mixed with regret. Heath Ledger enters as Robbie Clark, the 'Star of Electricity'. He plays the role of an actor playing Jack Rollins in a movie. His whirlwind romance and disintegrating marriage might or might not be reflecting Dylan's marriage with Sarah Lownds.
Richard Gere enacts the role of the 'outlaw', Billy the kid, not the one who died with a bullet at the hands of Pat Garrett...but the legend who dodged who the bullet and went off to live in peace and grow old in the town of Riddle. This segment is a bit confusing especially for greenhorn Dylan fans like me. But you can't resist this vaguely sepia-tinted Felliniesque circus of a town, standing still in time.
Finally, Cate Blanchett...in the performance of a lifetime, channeling the Dylan of the late 60s, his hair standing on end, alienating his fans, rebelling against nature, media and the idea of himself as rebel. The scenes with David Cross as Allen Ginsberg, the beat-poet are to be treasured. They yell to Jesus on the cross, "How does it feel?" Amazingly, Blanchett bears the most startling resemblance to Dylan. He/she toying around with reporters, confounding them with cryptic statements like "saying cause of peace is like a hunk of butter"...flirts with an Edgie Sedgewick like socialite at a party.
Specific references, both obvious and oblique, to different points in Dylan's life are peppered throughout. Todd Haynes has practically annihilated the dime-a-dozen formulaic Hollywood biopics with his brilliant, surreal vision. Without Dylan's name appearing even once, what comes through is an indelible portrait of Dylan, the constantly contradictory shape-shifting genius.
At the end of the day, it's all about chaos, clocks and watermelon...about music which talks of roses growing out of people's brains, about lovers who are really geese and swans that turn into angels.
