There are many genres in music which people listen to or partake in by singing or playing musical instruments. Metalcore is just one of them. So what is metalcore? And who plays it?
Metalcore is a popular genre which originated in the 1980's and combines the elements of heavy metal, thrash metal, hardcore punk, crossover thrash and youth crew like the musical style of heavy metal and the shouting vocal style of hardcore.
Here is a little about the styles of music metalcore came from. Heavy Metal is a subgenre of rock music and was developed in the United States and United Kingdom in the late 1960s and early 1970's. It is characterised by music that is loud and aggressive with a strong beat and lyrics. Most experts consider bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple to among the first. Many styles and subgenres developed from heavy metal, including Thrash Metal with its fast tempo and aggression eg Metallica. Hardcore Punk is a subgenre of punk rock that originated primarily in No originated in the 1980's and is a combination of thrash metal and hardcore punk eg Slapshot Youth Crew developed in the 1980 and is a subgenre of hardcore punk eg Youth of Today.
The emphasis of metalcore is on breakdowns which are often open string rhythmic passages using galloping and triplets. At live shows people like to mosh to breakdowns.
People play metalcore in bands which generally consist of two electric guitars ( both play rhythm and lead ), bass guitar, drums with double kick and vocals. The two electric guitar players play fast riffs with dual leads. To help make the guitar sound heavier and fast riffing easier, people drop the tuning of guitars from standard E to drop D through to drop A. Bass players usually follow the rhythm guitar and receives cues from the drums. Vocals is usually in the form of screaming and death growl. Some bands combine the use of screaming with clean vocals usually during the bridge or chorus of a song.
There are many metalcore bands eg August Burns Red, Unearth, Miss May I, Parkway Drive.
Let's look at August Burns Red and Parkway Drive as Metalcore Music examples.
August Burns Red is a Christian American Band formed in 2002. The name originated from an incident involving their first vocalist. The five current members are JB Brubaker on lead guitar, Brent Rambler on ryhthm guitar, Matt Greiner on drums, percussion, keyboards, piano, Jake Luhrs on lead vocals and Dustin Davidson on bass and backing vocals.
They have recorded and released three studio albums called Thrill Seeker in 2005 with 11 tracks, Messengers in 2007 with 11 tracks and Constellations in 2009 with 12 tracks; two EPs called Looks Fragile After All in 2004 with 5 tracks and Lost Messangers: The Outtakes in 2009 with 7 tracks; plus vinyl releases, extended plays, demos, compliations and music videos.
Parkway Drive is an Australian Band formed in 2002. The name originated from the street where they used to practise. There are five current members who are Luke Kilpatrick and Jeff Ling on Electric Guitars, Jia O'Conner on Bass, Ben Gordon on Drums and Winston McCall on Vocals.
They have released two split EPs in 2003 called I Killed The Prom Queen/ Parkway Drive: Split CD and What We've Built; an Ep in 2004 called Don't Close Your Eyes
and two full albums called Killing With A Smile in 2006, containing 11 tracks and Horizons, a best selling release in 2007 with 12 tracks. They are about to release their third album at the end of June called Deep Blue.
So as you can see metalcore music is a mixture of other styles of music and is played in a band situation of particular instruments, of which there are many.
