The strange thing about Mexican prison tattoos is you get them before you go to prison. More often than not an individual gets tattooed as soon as he joins a gang, and before he goes on his first ''mission''.

As his criminal career expands, he gets further tattoos commensurate with his status in the gang. These tattoos have a sub-cultural language that is all their own, featuring unique inscriptions alien to all but the initiated... and law enforcement agencies.

Some of the inscriptions on the tattoo will indicate:

1) The gang emblem.

2) The person's identity. This is rarely ever the birth name of the individual, but rather, their street name.

3) The criminal acts the person has committed on behalf of the gang.

4) His 'turf', which could refer to where he is usually based or 'working', or the jails he's done time in - or a combination of both.

When this person is eventually arrested, tried, and jailed, his tattoo serves as 'ID' to signify his status to other inmates belonging in the same gang. This identification will offer him a degree of protection from other inmates in jail, made fearful of reprisals.

For an individual imprisoned who had no prior gang affiliations, a personal decision is often made to join a gang once inside the prison walls, mostly for protection from violent inmates.

As part of the covert initiation, a prison tattoo is branded on the person using the most primitive methods.

How the tattoos are Made

Mexican prison tattoos, and other gang tattoos are not the type of thing you walk into a tattoo parlour to request, without getting strange looks.

These are wholly underground endeavours, performed either in prison, or well away from public view.

Sterile, hygienic conditions found in tattoo parlours are a world away from the crude methodologies employed in the Mexican prison tattoo procedure. A needle is dipped in ink and tapped into the skin. Another method is to create the tattoos with a crude machine made up of a small motor, a battery, a hollow pen, some ink, and a piece of guitar string.

The main gangs with real prominence in Mexican correctional facilities include:

1) The La Nuestra Familia

A particularly vicious gang, their identification tattoo comprises a sombrero laid over a machete that is covered in blood. The letters NF and NS represent textual identification of members.

2) The Mexican Mafia

The Mexican Mafia has a high representation in the Mexican prison system. Their known identification tattoo shows an eagle holding a snake in its mouth, and usually perched above the letters E.M.E.

Other designs have been known to include a black-colored hand holding the logo M.M. or E.M.E.

3) Los Vatos Locos

This is another fearsome Mexican gang. Their name translated to English, approximates to "The Crazy Guys", and their known tattoo mark is a triangle of three tiny dots.

If you see a Mexican gang member wearing a tattoo of a gun, it's a fair bet he usually carries one around. The position of the gun on the tattoo indicates the person's role as a gunman. If it points upwards, it means the person is a shooter. If it points straight, it means the person usually packs a gun.

Prison Symbols

Certain tattoo designs indicate the time spent behind bars. This would include:

1) Cell doors

2) Barbed wire

3) Cell windows

4) Guard towers

5) Courtyard walls
