Most guitar players are eager to learn to play some full songs. As a beginner it can get quite boring playing the same practice exercises over and over, and let's be honest those exercises sound any thing but like a song.
The argument is that you must learn the basics before you can start playing songs. Similar to the old saying you must learn to walk before you can run. Trying to play a song on the guitar before you are proficient with chords would cause more frustration then enjoyment.
If you are a beginner who knows their basic open chords then this article will introduce you to three easy beginner guitar songs. All three songs use only open chords and they're great for learning to play and sing at the same time.
House of the Rising Sun
This song was made famous by The Animals and was a favorite at dances in the late sixties. As a beginner guitar song it only uses five chords, all of which are in the open position.
To play house of the rising sun you will need to know how to play Am, C, D, F and E7. If you're not familiar with E7 you can look it up in a chord chart. A quick tip is to make your regular E major chord and remove your second finger from the second fret of the D string.
A Pink Floyd Hit
If you like acoustic songs then no doubt you're a fan of Wish you Were Here by Pink Floyd. When learning to play this song skip over the solo at the beginning and go right to the chords when the lyrics start.
The chords used in this song are C, D, Am, Em and G, all of which can be played in the open position. It can take a couple of tries to get the rhythm down correctly for this song but once you have it this song is a treat to play.
A Tune by Neil Young
Heart of Gold was one of the hits to come off of Neil Young's album Harvest Moon, and is just one of several great beginner guitar songs from his string of hits.
To play Heart of Gold you need to know your Em, C, D and G chords.
With all three songs I'd urge you to listen to the song first and then try to pick out the chord progression and strumming patterns by ear. I've given you the chords used in each song, now it's your turn to piece them together.
This is an excellent learning by ear exercise that will help you learn even more songs as you expand your skills.
