Sunday night in the Putnam home is game night. You remember good old fashioned game night, right? No TV, no checking email, no iPods...just the family sitting around the table competing to see who's going to reign as the family champ for the week.
The game Sorry has been a favorite of ours because it's easy to play and probably because I played it a bunch as a kid. Don't we all like to do what we do best?
I always liked the game because as a kid I could beat my older sister. If you haven't played Sorry, the game "starts" with the traditional family pecking order of "What color do you want?" Oldest and strongest usually picks red or blue, weakest and smallest usually gets stuck with green or yellow. (Hey, don't take it personally if you're green or yellow. I happen to choose green.)
The idea is to move your 4 "men" around the board getting them into home. You draw a card in clockwise order and the number on the card tells you how many spaces to go along with some special jumps or moves.
The term Sorry comes from drawing a Sorry card which allows you to take your man out of home and grab someone's spot on the board and send them back home. "Sorry" becomes a unapologetic way of getting ahead on the board.
One of the things I like about the game is that anyone can win...even a 5 year old...and win, repeatedly.
How does she do that? I think to myself as I watch my daughter Grace win repeatedly week after week. She has a 14 yr. old sister that can't seem to get all of her men out of home before Grace has won.
Lessons Learned From a 5 yr. old Sorry Champion
1. Fun.
Enjoys what she's doing. I'll watch her and she's smiling all the time.
Do you enjoy your work? Or play? Possibly you take it way too serious. I'll be the first one to raise my hand on this one. Yes, I take my responsibilities to heart, but I could enjoy playing more. I really don't have that many years of my youngest wanting to play tag. I'm committing to being more playful with my girls.
2. Believes she going to win.
I watched her play this game many times. Every time, Grace approaches the game "as if" she's already the winner. No doubt, no fear, no worries. How many minutes in your day are you spending doubting, fearing, or worrying?
Why not approach life "as if" there's only winning headed your way. When Grace has lost, it takes her all of a millisecond to say, "Want to play again?" Move on people, there are wins waiting for you...if only you'll move on from your last loss.
3. Going for the bold move.
I've witnessed a 5 yr. old with guts. When do we lose that? I mean, I take bold moves, but she always does. I'll admit sometimes, I'll play it safe and go for the "sure thing." Not her, every move she's attempting to win.
4. Doesn't get discouraged if she gets setback, just keeps moving forward.
If Grace gets sent home in the game, she's not revengeful or angry. She's already looking to see when her next drawing of the card is. Can't we all look forward a bit more, instead of in our rear view mirror of life?
5. Stays focused on her game, not even really aware of what others are doing.
The other night I had 3 men in home and 1 in the safety zone. It didn't matter to her. Grace was watching her own game, that was all she cared about. Not how others were close to winning, she had her "blinders" on and was looking for her next move so that she could win...and she did!
My friends, you can move through your lives with the confidence that you have greatness waiting for you, if you're willing to grab hold!
You're capable of so much more than you realize!
I'll look forward to hearing your results,
