Why learn acoustic guitar?
There are many reasons for learning acoustic guitar, and as you are reading this you probably have your own reasons too. For many people it can be a fun hobby to relax, unwind and pass the time. Others find great rewards in always learning and overcoming each challenge. Some people enjoy showing off their skills to others, and maybe try to impress friends, colleagues, family and even the opposite sex! The most ambitious people see it as a way to start a new career as a session musician, song writer, or even pop star! Whatever your reasons, learning acoustic guitar can be very rewarding and will give you a skill that will stay with you for life.
How to learn
There are so many ways to learn to play acoustic guitar and it all comes down to how you learn best. Some people prefer to hire a teacher who can show them how to play in person, and answer any questions straight away. There are also hundreds of books and video products out there that it is hard to know where to start. Books are great because they are cheap and you can take them anywhere without switching your PC on. Videos have the advantage of being able to show you what to do. Others prefer to take an online course, which can take you right from novice to advanced guitar playing in one course. All of these methods work so its really up to you how you want to learn - whichever you choose, its up to you to put in the practice!
When to learn
There is no magic bullet when it comes to learning acoustic guitar, and the only way is to practice. The more you practice, the more progress you will make in a shorter time. Practice as often as possible, and aim for 3-4 times per week. Of course if you want to turn guitar playing into a career, you'll need to put in more time - the pros practice for 4-5 hours every day. Dire Straits guitarist, Mark Knopfler once said "I nailed the art of falling asleep while I was playing when I was a teenager. I would end up on the floor with a guitar over me, because I would nod off with my hands going through the same old thing." If playing guitar will just be a hobby then you don't need to practice that hard but the more you put in, the more you get out.
How long will it take?
How long the acoustic guitar will take to learn depends on a lot of things. If you can already play an instrument, you will find it easier as you will have some knowledge of music theory. The amount of time you practice the guitar will make a difference too. Like it or not, some people have more natural talent than others and will pick it up quicker. For most people, it should take around 6 months to a year of good practice to get to a decent standard of playing.
Is learning acoustic guitar difficult?
Its neither hard or easy to learn acoustic guitar. Most people find it hard to start with and find that it gets easier quite quickly. Some people will find it easier than others because they are lucky enough to be born with natural talent and good sized hands, but anyone can reach a good level with a little patience, effort, and good advice.
Is it expensive?
Acoustic guitars range in price from around $50 to over $1000 but it can be very cheap to start learning acoustic guitar. All you need is a cheap guitar, some spare strings, some picks, a tuner, and something to learn from. Whether you choose to use books, DVDs, online courses, or a real guitar teacher will depend on how much you can afford. Learning acoustic guitar from books is often cheapest, and a teacher will cost the most.
I'm Terry and I love playing the acoustic guitar and teaching others how to do the same. I also run a web site on Learning Acoustic Guitar.

Epiphone MM-50E Professional Electric Mandolin Natural $699 Many products claim to be revolutionary but, more often than not, that claim falls short of expectations. This isn't the case with the Epiphone MM-50E professional mandolin. The construction fundamentals for the MM-50E's rich, natural acoustic sound are ensured with a solid spruce top and gorgeous flamed maple back and sides. A rosewood fingerboard is fitted with dot inlays. The MM-50E professional is the first mandolin that allows you to adjust the output level of each individual string pair, solving the inherent mandolin problem of unbalanced string pair volume. The Epiphone MM-50E mandolin starts with the "Quad" NanoMAG pickup. Designed in cooperation with Shadow Germanywho have been making acoustic pickups for over 30 yearsthe NanoMAG is a unique, low-impedance humbucking pickup equipped with Samarium cobalt magnets that capture true acoustic tone and a wide range of harmonics. Under each string pair is a separate coil that picks up only the sound of that string pair with crosstalk separation of >85dB. Each of the mandolin's 4 output levels is controlled by 4 trimpots, which are discretely accessible from the top of the pickguard via a mini flathead screwdriver. Once set to your desired levels, you would typically never need to adjust the levels again.Rather than loading down the mandolin with electronics and adversely affecting its natural acoustic tone, the Shadow system puts all the electronics inside the pickguard. This allows the Epiphone mandolin to respond and sound just like an acoustic mando should. On the pickguard are master volume, treble, and bass rotary controls, as well as an easy-access battery compartment using a lightweight, long lasting 2032 watch-style lithium battery. Even the pickup is mounted on the pickguard. For added versatilityand to allow you to position it in the optimum location for your picking stylethe NanoMag can slide back toward the bridge for a brighter tone, or forward toward the neck for a warmer tone. For a great vintage look as well as enhanced tonal characteristics, the Epiphone MM-50E Professional mandolin features a very thin, hand-rubbed polyoil finish. Not satin, this 50% sheen finish looks and feels great, while allowing the wood to vibrate more freely. With a history of making mandolins going back over 100 years, Epiphone knows how to make a great sounding mandolin. mandolin features classic "F" style specifications including a carved, solid Spruce top with traditional flamed maple back, sides, and neck. Multi-binding on the body and headstock, a classic mother-of-pearl "Flower Pot" headstock inlay, nickel hardware, vintage machine heads with pearloid buttons, and a Rosewood fingerboard and bridge pay tribute to Lloyd Loar's original "F" style design. |
