The Ibanez Jem, the signature electric guitar of Steve Vai, is one of the most popular instruments in the world, in fact is the 2nd most successful electric guitar endorsement, the first being of course the Les Paul.
But the Ibanez Jem is a much more demanding instrument than the 50+ years old icon, while the Les Paul demands whatever level of attention the owner believes it deserves, even the most affordable Jem needs the owner to be familiar with a couple of technical things.
The most important one is the tremolo bridge, even if you have played with original Floyd Rose bridges before, the systems that Ibanez guitars use are different.
The one in the Jem 7VWH is one of the most advanced tremolo systems made to date, with the now legendary lion claw reaccessed cavity that allow notes to be raised with the tremolo arm up to a whole fifth.
To have this bridge perform at its best it's necessary to set it up correctly, luckily Ibanez has started to post videos on their website on how to change strings on their bridges.
The most important thing that I would point out in the many steps that it takes to do this is to change strings one at a time, and make sure to tune up the newly installed string up to pitch and stretch it a little before putting the next one.
The reason being that the tremolo is held in place by springs, its angle is determined by pressure, when you take a string you're affecting the whole bridge, but by installing a new string and tuning it up you bring it back to normal.
Depending how quick you need the guitar to be locked down, I found it better to keep the nut unlocked for the first night when I changed a whole set of strings.
