Though English is a universal language, no one can deny that chat acronyms have become popular in different cultures all over the world. In fact, many people have started squeezing them into their everyday conversations. Whether chatting, IMing or emailing, you have to know the common chat acronyms in order to survive in cyberspace.
The first and most common group of chat acronyms is that which indicates laughter. LOL, or Laugh Out Loud, is the most commonly used acronym. However, ROFL (Roll on Floor Laughing, BWL (Bursting with Laughter), and LMAO (Laugh my Ass Off) are also used.
The second group is basically shortened words. For example, BRB means Be Right Back whereas TYT is actually the acronym of Take Your Time. Other popular chat acronyms of this group include THX (Thanks), YW (Your Welcome), IDK (I Don't Know), and BTW (By the Way).
Another collection of chat acronyms indicates the type of person chatting. For example, a young man introducing himself can state his gender by typing YM (Young Man). Similarly, a woman can type YL (Young Lady). Teens who want to have some fun can refer to themselves or others as SNERT (Snot-Nosed Egotistical Rude Teenager).
Aside from these groups, different phrases such as YBS (You Will be Sorry), WTH (What the Hell?!), SPST (Same Place, Same Time) are used regularly to communicate different emotions through cyberspace. However, add to those symbols such as smileys (a.k.a. emoticons) and you will be able to have the effect you want.
Communicating online is never difficult. Plus, with all the acronyms around, you can easily save the time you would have wasted while typing long phrases. However, make sure that you have an idea of what the acronym being used may mean. Otherwise, you may end up typing LOL when someone calls you a SNERT.
