Hello today I am continuing with my series everything you need to know about violin from A-Z. We are now on E for Electric violin. In reality there is not much difference between and these violins and a traditional violin the only real difference is that they are equipped with electronic devices known as pickups which output its sound electronically.
The electrically amplified violin has been used in many forms since the 1920's, jazz and blues artist stuff smith is credited as being one of the first performers to adapt pickups and amplifiers to violins. Many companies such as Fender, Vega and National Valco have tried their hand at selling electric violins since the 1930s and 40s.
Acoustic violin can be used with a pickup attached to the body of the violin. To avoid feedback from the resonances of the hollow body of the violin many instruments have a solid body instead. The electric violin will generally have a sharper sound compared to a hollow body violin this is because of the resonances created by the hollow body compared to the resonances created by a solid body.
If you have ever seen pictures of solid body violins you will notice their minimalistic non-traditional shape, they are designed like this to keep the weight down since they are made from wood and can also be designed from materials such as Kevlar, glass and carbon fiber. Because these instruments are seen as being experimental there are often many design variations such as extra frets strings and machine heads.
These types of violins are rarely used in classical music being used mostly in other genres such as metal, rock, hip hop, pop and jazz.
