Modulation $92.4 Modulation is the process of varying one waveform in relation to another waveform. In telecommunications, modulation is used to convey a message, or a musician may modulate the tone from a musical instrument by varying its volume, timing and pitch. Often a highfrequency sinusoid waveform is used as carrier signal to convey a lower frequency signal. The three key parameters of a sine wave are its amplitude ( volume ), its phase ( timing ) and its frequency ( pitch ), all of which can be modified in accordance with a low frequency information signal to obtain the modulated signal. A device that performs modulation is known as a modulator and a device that performs the inverse operation of modulation is known as a demodulator (sometimes detector or demod). A device that can do both operations is a modem (short for ModulatorDemodulator ). Wavelet Modulation $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Wavelet modulation, also known as fractal modulation, is a modulation technique that makes use of wavelet transformations to represent the data being transmitted. One of the objectives of this type of modulation is to send data at multiple rates over a channel that is unknown. If the channel is not clear for one specific bit rate, meaning that the signal will not be received, the signal can be sent at a different bit where the signal to noise ratio is higher. Ring Modulation $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Ring modulation is a signalprocessing effect in electronics, related to amplitude modulation or frequency mixing, performed by multiplying two signals, where one is typically a sinewave or another simple waveform. It is referred to as ring modulation because the analog circuit of diodes originally used to implement this technique took the shape of a ring. This circuit is similar to a bridge rectifier, except that instead of the diodes facing left or right, they go clockwise or anticlockwise. Trellis Modulation $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In telecommunication, trellis modulation (also known as trellis coded modulation, or simply TCM) is a modulation scheme which allows highly efficient transmission of information over bandlimited channels such as telephone lines. Trellis modulation was invented by Gottfried Ungerboeck working for IBM in the 1970s, and first described in a conference paper in 1976; but it went largely unnoticed until he published a new detailed exposition in 1982 which achieved sudden widespread recognition. PulsePosition Modulation $62.13 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Pulseposition modulation (PPM) is a form of signal modulation in which M message bits are encoded by transmitting a single pulse in one of 2M possible timeshifts. This is repeated every T seconds, such that the transmitted bit rate is M/T bits per second. It is primarily useful for optical communications systems, where there tends to be little or no multipath interference. One of the key difficulties of implementing this technique is that the receiver must be properly synchronized to align the local clock with the beginning of each symbol. Therefore, it is often implemented differentially as differential pulseposition modulation, where by each pulse position is encoded relative to the previous, such that the receiver must only measure the difference in the arrival time of successive pulses. Frequency Modulation $92.4 In telecommunications, frequency modulation (FM ) conveys information over a carrier wave by varying its frequency (contrast this with amplitude modulation, in which the amplitude of the carrier is varied while its frequency remains constant). In analog applications, the instantaneous frequency of the carrier is directly proportional to the instantaneous value of the input signal. Digital data can be sent by shifting the carriers frequency among a set of discrete values, a technique known as frequencyshift keying. Amplitude Modulation $92.4 Amplitude modulation (AM) is a technique used in electronic communication, most commonly for transmitting information via a radio carrier wave. AM works by varying the strength of the transmitted signal in relation to the information being sent. For example, changes in the signal strength can be used to reflect the sounds to be reproduced by a speaker, or to specify the light intensity of television pixels. (Contrast this with frequency modulation, also commonly used for sound transmissions, in which the frequency is varied; and phase modulation, often used in remote controls, in which the phase is varied). In the mid1870s, a form of amplitude modulationinitially called undulatory currents was the first method to successfully produce quality audio over telephone lines. Beginning with Reginald Fessendens audio demonstrations in 1906, it was also the original method used for audio radio transmissions, and remains in use today by many forms of communication AM is often used to refer to the mediumwave broadcast band. Fundamentals of Spread Spectrum Modulation $35 This lecture covers the fundamentals of spread spectrum modulation, which can be defined as any modulation technique that requires a transmission bandwidth much greater than the modulating signal bandwidth, independently of the bandwidth of the modulating signal. After reviewing basic digital modulation techniques, the principal forms of spread spectrum modulation are described. One of the most important components of a spread spectrum system is the spreading code, and several types and their characteristics are described. The most essential operation required at the receiver in a spread spectrum system is the code synchronization, which is usually broken down into the operations of acquisition and tracking. Means for performing these operations are discussed next. Finally, the performance of spread spectrum systems is of fundamental interest and the effect of jamming is considered, both without and with the use of forward error correction coding. The presentation ends with consideration of spread spectrum systems in the presence of other users. |

Space Vector Modulation $65.33 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Space vector modulation (SVM) is an algorithm for the control of pulse width modulation (PWM). It is used for the creation of alternating current (AC) waveforms; most commonly to drive 3 phase AC powered motors at varying speeds from DC using multiple classD amplifiers. There are various variations of SVM that result in different quality and computational requirements. One active area of development is in the reduction of total harmonic distortion (THD) created by the rapid switching inherent to these algorithms. Adaptive Coding and Modulation $95.59 This book considers the problem of Adaptive Modulation scheme selection through an OFDM based system over parallel frequencyselective fading channels. Here, an adaptive coding scheme is also proposed by using Generalized Concatenated Codes (GCe, which have simple structure and are designed in such a way that they are best suited for fading channels. GCC are based on binary cyclic codes. The criterion of study is the optimization of throughput of the system. Through a proposed adaptive algorithm,a modulation selection scheme is proposed which is based on the quality of the Subchannels. Moreover, a code assigning method for the different subchannels, which adapts itself to the channel conditions is also proposed. The proposed scheme combats against channel impairments better than those used in conventional systems by exploiting individual subchannel condition. Results show better performance in terms of lower bit error rate as well as higher throughput. Modulation and Coding Techniques in Wireless Communications $135 The high level of technical detail included in standards specifications can make it difficult to find the correlation between the standard specifications and the theoretical results. This book aims to cover both of these elements to give accessible information and support to readers. It explains the current and future trends on communication theory and shows how these developments are implemented in contemporary wireless communication standards. Examining modulation, coding and multiple access techniques, the book is divided into two major sections to cover these functions. The two-stage approach first treats the basics of modulation and coding theory before highlighting how these concepts are defined and implemented in modern wireless communication systems. Part 1 is devoted to the presentation of main L1 procedures and methods including modulation, coding, channel equalization and multiple access techniques. In Part 2, the uses of these procedures and methods in the wide range of wireless communication standards including WLAN, WiMax, WCDMA, HSPA, LTE and cdma2000 are considered. An essential study of the implementation of modulation and coding techniques in modern standards of wireless communication Bridges the gap between the modulation coding theory and the wireless communications standards material Divided into two parts to systematically tackle the topic - the first part develops techniques which are then applied and tailored to real world systems in the second part Covers special aspects of coding theory and how these can be effectively applied to improve the performance of wireless communications systems |
