Chopin's preludes are a landmark in musical evolution. Before Chopin, a prelude was mainly used as a little musical introduction before a fuga or something in the genre. Chopin was the first to write preludes detached from another musical piece, and are solo pieces by themselves. Chopin wrote 24 preludes, and published them in 1839 as opus number 28 (not including the amazing one op. 45, and not including the Ab post. one and another spurious one on F major, and not including the Devill's Trill Prelude in Eb, which was reconstructed by Jeffrey Kallberg), and in each prelude he put so much uniqueness that it's awe inspiring. Every prelude gives a little glimpse at an emotion felt by the composer, most of the times extreme.
The preludes are written in set of 24 pieces, most of them short ones, and each piece is written in another key. Chopin definitely took inspiration from Bach here, from "The Well Tempered Klavier", Bach's famous and monumental work. The preludes are written in the circle of fifths, while Bach's preludes were written in a chromatic order.
Each one of the the preludes in a miniature masterpiece, but because the preludes convey such a diversity in Chopin's style, they are actually supposed to be played as master set, all together.
Some preludes gained more fame than others, such as no. 15 in Db (often referred to as the raindrop prelude), no. 20 in Cm, and no. 7 in A major. Most of the preludes are not hard technically, the hardest one in the set is number 16, sometimes referred to as "Hades".
Most of the preludes were written between 1835-1839. The final touches to them were made in Majorca, when Chopin traveled to the Spanish island with George Sand and her children to take a break from France. In Majorca, Chopin became extremely ill, and the local population relocated Chopin and Sand to a monastery, with reminded Chopin a coffin. Chopin's situation deteriorated and he started to hallucinate stuff, so the finally came back to France, and poor Chopin had to travel in a boat which moved pigs, because there was no other option to get back fast to France.
When Chopin came back to France he finished the preludes and published them. The preludes were received in warm critics regarding their ingenuity in structure and harmony, but some critics looked at them as strange pieces of music, and indeed these are amongst Chopin strangest pieces of music.
