1) What is milk thistle good for when it comes to the liver?

It has been shown to reduce the activity of some types of the hepatitis viruses. Over the years, it has been used to treat cirrhosis and chronic inflammation of the liver. In recent studies, it was shown to have a beneficial effect on liver health among workers exposed to substances that are known to be toxic to the liver, such as toluene.

It is believed to have chelating activity, which means that it helps remove toxic heavy metals from the liver and other bodily organs. Other plant extracts work in that way, too.

2) What is milk thistle good for when it comes to the heart?

It may be beneficial for lowering cholesterol, which is important to the health of the heart. But, there is more supportive evidence for extracts such as green tea, lecithin and policosanol for that purpose. Resveratrol, which is an antioxidant found in red grape skins, has been shown to prolong the life of heart cells. Curcumin, from turmeric, has been shown to repair damage to the heart that has already occurred. Olive leaf extracts have been shown to lower blood pressure.

3) What is milk thistle good for when it comes to helping prevent cancer?

Some studies suggest that it may help prevent cancer of the prostate, breast and cervix. These are usually hormone sensitive cancers and many plant extracts have been shown to reduce the growth of these cells in vitro. That is in a laboratory test tube.

Many studies have tried to recreate the effect in humans, but have been unsuccessful. The most evidence for prevention of prostate and breast cancer comes from green tea studies. Studies concerning the benefit of curcumin for pancreatic and other types of cancer are currently ongoing.

Resveratrol may be beneficial for preventing cancer, as well. Researchers have shown that resveratrol interferes with all of the phases of cancer development. What milk thistle extract may do in this area is still unclear.

What is milk thistle good for overall? It is an important part of a complete supplement regimen to protect the health of the liver from toxic heavy metals and to reduce our risk of chronic disease.
