Is an SG style electric guitar the right instrument for you? Following is some basic information to help you decide. Sometimes, when people go shopping for a guitar, they find a confusing array on the internet. The websites will list features of various guitar models, but they all assume the shopper has some basic knowledge about what he is looking for. It's a situation similar to buying a car. Websites that sell cars all assume you know the difference between a four-door sedan and a sports car. This article will assist your guitar shopping by giving basic information about one particular style of guitar. Articles about other guitar styles will follow. You may or may not choose to buy an SG Style electric guitar, but at least you will have a little background information about the history and basic features of this one instrument.
History:
SG style electric guitars were first introduced on the market by Gibson Co. in 1961 to compete with Fender Stratocaster. SG is a Gibson manufacturing term, (short for "Solid Guitar"). When manufacturers other than Gibson make their own, (cheaper), versions of this guitar style, they name their guitars "SG Style" or "SG Copy." Use of the term "SG" by other manufacturers does not imply endorsement by the Gibson Company. Some notable guitar players who have used Gibson SG guitars: Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page. Professionals choose SG style guitars for their light weight, the warm tone produced by a mahogany body, and ease of playing afforded by the double cutaways and slender neck. Throughout the years, whether manufactured by Gibson, or cheaper copies made by other companies, SG style remains a popular rock and roll guitar.
Features:
Body: The body is solid mahogany, with double cutaways providing easy access to upper registers. The cutaways are curved with pointed ends, giving them the appearance of horns. The "horns" are the most obvious feature. They make an SG style guitar instantly recognizable. Horns fit in very well with a rock and roll stage setting, (given the rock and roll penchant for skulls, flames, etc.). An SG body is thinner and lighter than a Les Paul guitar. Professional players appreciate the light weight, but on the downside, the lightness in weight tends to make the guitar somewhat "neck heavy." So, it's a trade-off. Many players think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Neck: The neck has a shallower profile than a Les Paul guitar. It joins the body at the 19th fret, (instead of the 16th fret on the Les Paul), for improved access to upper registers. It has been advertised by Gibson as "the fastest neck in the world", due to the ultra-slim neck profile.
Joint: SG guitars have a set neck joint instead of the bolt-on neck that is so familiar on other electric guitars. Set neck joints are often preferred to the more convenient bolt-on necks. On the downside, a neck with a glued joint can be very difficult, (but not impossible), to replace. A skilled luthier can, (very carefully), unglue the neck and install a new one. Of course, he will expect to be generously compensated for performing this tricky operation. Set necks have the advantage of not coming loose after hard use. They are also considered, by some, to produce better music. Theoretically, a set neck joint ensures maximum contact between body and neck, allowing the two parts to function as a single resonant unit.
Electronics: Since 1961, Gibson has produced their SG guitars with several different pickup configurations. Electronics usually consist of two humbucker pickups, and a three-way pickup selector. Pickup configurations change from one model to the next, as improvements are developed. Other manufacturers do the same. The guitar has two volume controls, and two tone controls, allowing a player to fine-tune the sound produced by each pickup.
Finish: Gibson makes their SG guitars with a transparent finish, (in a choice of color), allowing the grain of mahogany wood to show through. Transparent finish is in competition with the brightly-colored opaque finish that is so familiar on other electric guitar styles. Taking their cue from Gibson, other manufacturers also make their SG style guitars with a transparent finish; in keeping with the taste of people who are devotees of the SG guitar style.
Stadium Pearl White SG Style Guitar: This beautiful electric guitar, (with transparent white body and black trim), is an ideal choice for a novice player's first guitar if he longs to play rock and roll. It is much more affordable than the big-name brand, while providing the same versatility and ease of playing. If you only want to play at home for your own entertainment, Stadium Pearl White SG Style Guitar will let you learn techniques that made the big stars famous. If you have a notion to play small venues, this guitar will get the job done. It will help you to prepare for bigger and better things, if that's what you have in mind. The transparent Pearl White color is a Stadium brand exclusive.
