It never fails, you spend all summer honing your swing and fine tuning your game; only to see it all fade away over the long wet winters. There are ways to keep the rust from completely over taking your game. Here are a few tips that will keep you in golfing shape and your swing thoughts fresh in your mind
• With less time on the course, you have more time to go to the gym. Keep your golfing muscles toned by concentrating on light weights, cardio vascular and stretching. This will help keep the body trim, increase your stamina, allow you to maintain & perhaps increase your flexibility, while also keeping the winter weight down. All of these help in both mental & physical fitness, which in turn helps us to continue to enjoy the game of golf.
• Set up a mirror in your garage or den and practice club positions. By repeating your take away and follow through you can see the arc of your swing, the position of your body in relation to your shoulder turn, knee flex and spine angle. If you do this properly you will be gaining muscle memory that will correlate to better posture and body control that will result in better ball striking. Better ball striking results in far fewer balls hooking or slicing into hazards & OBs. This means fewer balls lost, less money spent on balls and maybe allow you to upgrade the ball you use because you are losing fewer of them.
• While sitting around the house watching football or basketball, simply hold a club in your hand. Make sure while you are doing this, you have the proper grip. If you are a golfer who struggles with an inter-locking or over-lapping grip, now is the time to get comfortable with it. With the proper grip all things are possible, without it the chances of becoming a consistent golfer are very slim. Let's face it; the game is hard enough when you do the fundamentals correctly.
• Practice putting on a hard wood or vinyl floor. Learn how to control the speed of your putts on extremely hard surfaces. This will give you touch and create eye hand coordination that will soon have you winning that Nassau that your buddies usually expect to take from you.
Let's face it, if you truly love golf, this is not the most enjoyable time of year. There are some very simple things, that if you do them properly, will keep you in touch with your clubs, your swing thoughts and the game you love.
Here's to the few sunny days we have left ahead of us and to the golf drills that are going to make us better golfers at the start of next season.
