The Cannondale bikes are the major bikes produced by the American bicycle manufacturer, which has it's headquarters in Connecticut and manufacturing unit in Bedford, Pennsylvania USA. The company was founded by Joe Montgomery in the year 1971. The company started to produce only bicycle trailers that are suitable for bicycle touring. Now the company is also very famous for its other type high end Cannondale bikes, which is specially made up of aluminum frames and they are the pioneers in this technology.

The Cannondale bikes are mainly used for the bicycle touring; this is a kind of recreational activity. This involves riding, site seeing, driving along the mountain areas and exploring unique things.. The cycle used for the touring should have some specific characters like longer wheelbase which increases the stability, larger width tires and a tread pattern that would be durable for along time and should withstand heat and cold and control over a wider variety of sand or stone commonly on terrain.

The aluminum used in the Cannondale bikes is the Optimo aluminum which has a mixture of more silicon and the magnesium content is very less. Due to this mixture the aluminum gets more elongating property and tensile strength. Because of the higher elongation the welded frames becomes less susceptible to any breakage or cracks as it has the stretching capacity. But if there is some very minute cracks care should be taken in the early stage if not it will turn into big cracks. As the metal has tensile strength less material can be used, still with the same quality.

The Cannondale bikes with the Cannondale Advanced Aluminum Design model was introduced with S-bend aluminum seat which gives extra comfort. There also other models that can be ridden on roads, mountains and used for recreation purposes. Few names of the models are Rush, Moto, F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8, F9, Slice, Synapse and many more. All the models have special features based on the usage.

Cannondale has developed a special suspension fork which is known as the Lefty. There are about 88 needle bearings which are used to reduce the friction and make the travel smooth with the bearings found to be inside the tube of the fork. This prevents the static friction and makes the journey convenient. There is another model called the Six-13 which uses the carbon frames, chemically bonded to the carbon seat top tubes and down.

The Cannondale also invented new technology called the hollowgram which is composed of the proprietary cranksett and bottom bracket technology and this is found only in the costlier bikes of the year 2001. The Cannondale Company in addition to the production of the cycles it also sponsors some cycle ridding competitions. So they have become very famous.
