Since the 1940's, the world has produced some of the greatest guitar players. Each guitar player has defined their own personal tone. The guitar tone started off in African American areas located in the USA known as the blues around the time of 1940's and 50's. This then led up to the rock 'n' roll era in the late 50's and 60's. Rock started to emerge from the 70's upwards leading to glam rock starting from the middle to late 80's. The Guitar legends derived from the US around the Mississippi and Chicago areas where the African Americans were located but then started to inspire some English names that would later on be among the greatest guitar players in history.
The 10 greatest guitar players
1. Jimmy Page
Jimmy page started off as a session musician and later on joined the mighty rock band Led Zeppelin. Page produced some distinct sounds that became instantly recognizable to the sound of Led Zeppelin.
2. David Gilmour
From the mighty rock band Pink Floyd around the 70's onwards, David Gilmour was a massive influence to the sounds of Pink Floyd through his spacey, heart trembling and subtle sounds that eases into you as you listen. Gilmour, is an under rated guitar player. But through his large bends and slides in his smooth playing this is what makes Gilmour an amazingly unique guitarist.
3. Eddie Van Halen
Eddie Van Halen is one speedy guitar player. Eddie is with the band Van Halen. He has produced some great sounding solos. His guitar playing utilizes feel with his harmonics incorporated with tremolo arm string bending. He also has the ability to mix arpeggios and chord rhythm playing making Eddie an all round rock guitar player. Eddie can sure whack out a slow guitar solo saying as much and is made evident in some of Van Halen's songs. The song Eruption is the one to listen to including the guitar solo in' Beat It'.
4. Slash
The Guns N Roses man can play rhythm and lead guitar solos, and make the guitar speak utilizing the wah-wah pedal. He can blend all this into one musical piece with a great sound. Let's face it he can do anything and is a little like Eddie Van Halen in that respect just with a different sound. Slash says he loves making a guitar solo sound great
5. Chuck Berry
As an early influence in music, Chuck Berry is an African American and he is the type of player that would just get up on stage get his guitar out and start playing with or without the band. Chuck Berry can sing a song through his guitar.
6. Stevie Ray Vaughan
A remarkable blues and rock guitar player is Stevie Ray. He is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix. But this guy hits the strings like no other stamping his authority into his sound. The good thing about Stevie Ray is that he play with little distortion so that his signature sound is heard naturally. With so much energy he can play on and on and nothing seems to tire him.
7. Eric Clapton
A proper blues guitar player and was influenced by the very early artists such as BB King and especially Robert Johnson. He can player any kind of blues music with no problem.
8. B.B King
An early blues guitarist and BB King is a big guy and so can control those strings extremely well. His Tremolo is the best sounding tremolo or music ever and can almost knock you out, well not literally.
9. Robert Johnson
This is one of the first guys out of the bunch. When electric guitars were not utilized around that time, Robert Johnson played with an acoustic guitar. A great influence to Eric Clapton, people often said that Johnson's guitar strings were often tuned to the devil.
10. Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix is arguably the first of the greatest guitar players he was the first guy to utilize the electric guitar to its potential of the start of the modern era. He would experiment with his instrument and perform all sorts of tricks with it. He simply had one aim and that is to make his instrument talk! Need I say anymore?!
