What do guitar players and car enthusiasts have in common? They both love to modify or "hot-rod" their gear. Since so much of guitar playing these days focuses upon the tools of the trade, it should come as no surprise that many guitarists are not satisfied with their stock gear and find ways to improve upon it. There's no greater example of this love of gear tweaking than Robert Keeley.

What do you get when you cross a love of the guitar with an engineer's keen sense of design and experimentation? Keeley Electronics, of course. Armed with an insatiable desire to improve upon stock designs as well as a craving to market his own original designs, Robert Keeley has rightfully earned a reputation as a top-flight modifier and designer of effects pedals.

Keeley's Boss pedal modifications are the stuff of legend with the most celebrated mod being the BD-2 "Phat" mod. Keeley also has quality modifications of the Boss DS-1 distortion pedal, Boss TR-2 tremolo pedal, and Ibanez TS-9/TS-808 overdrive pedals. Keeley also modifies various other pedals, including those by Line 6 and Voodoo Labs.

However, Keeley does indeed have his own original pedal designs (as far as any pedal design can be original). Perhaps his most famous design is the heralded Keeley Compressor. You would be hard pressed to find a pedalboard in any top LA or Nashvill studio that doesn't have a Keeley compressor in the signal chain. Aside from its incredibly musical and useful tones, the Keeley compressor has a signal-to-noise ratio that bests most rack-mounted compressors, much less an effects pedal compressor. Available in both 2 and 4 knob versions, the Keeley compressor is a must-have effects pedal.
