Christmas Gifts for Kids Ages 7-12
Finding something to give as Christmas gift to children between ages 7 to 12 can be a bit challenging. At this age, some children tend to outgrow the usual baby toys they enjoy and would opt for something that requires skills. To help you with this dilemma, I have put together a fair amount of tips and toy suggestions, which you may want to consider.
Gifts that Promotes Role-Playing
There are toys that are centered towards advanced role-playing and these are usually preferred kids of that age group. For instance, a voice activated helmet with lights with a sword can definitely be a delight for young boys. Deluxe model transformers may be given to kids ages 12 and beyond, however kids may need help to understand the features in such toys.
Gifts that Promote Creativity
Giving gifs that promotes creativity is widely available in department stores and local shops. A beads set for girls and a wood construction set for boys will really be interesting. Battery-operated building block sets is a good choice too or Lego types which can be made into robots is suitable for young boys.
Gifts that Promote Knowledge
Gifts that is scientific in nature gives additional knowledge to children. A telescope which can be used for stargazing and observing a larvae turn into a butterfly is a fun activity for the children.
Gifts that Promote Interaction
Children ages 7 to 12 tends to be self-critical and often need reassurance from adults. Interactive family games is great way to strengthen these relationships and kids would surely get enough a fair amount of reassurance from parents. Board games like Gobblet are highly suggested.
Gifts that are Electronic in Nature
Buying gifts that are electrically operated can be quite tricky for kids. Though it promotes skill development, children have the tendency to get hooked with it causing more disadvantages. Nintendos and playstations can be a sure fun for them but parents should also impose strict limitations especially if it interferes with studying and homework. Presently, kids as early as seven have been given permission to use cellphones, as we are now in the electronic era but parents should establish rules to avoid the disadvantages of it. Digital cameras are also a nice item to give but it is a little bit costly and requires ultimate care. Should you feel to give one out to your kids, make sure to teach her how to handle it well.
Whatever gift you decide to give, it is more important to make the child feel loved and special. Selecting a gift that matches the child's personality will let him or her know you notice them. Make sure to include small notes attached to the gift expressing your love for them and mentioning special attributes you have seen in them. Though the gift will more likely overrule the gift, be assured that your child will read and treasure them, because aside from the gift, each child just wants reassurance that they are loved and special.

The Kid Table $5.99 Ingrid Bell and her five teenage cousins are such a close-knit group that they don't really mind sitting at the kid table - even if they have to share it with a four-year-old. But then Brianne, the oldest cousin, lands a seat at the adult table and leaves her cousins shocked and confused. What does it take to graduate from the kid table? Over the course of five family events, Ingrid chronicles the coming-of-age of her generation. Her cousins each grapple with growing pains, but it is Ingrid who truly struggles as she considers what it means to grow up. When first love comes in the form of first betrayal (he's Brianne's boyfriend), Ingrid is forced to question her own personality and how she fits into her family. The cousins each take their own path toward graduating into adulthood - only to realize that maybe the kid table was where they wanted to be all along. Almost a reverse coming-of-age, this touching and hilariously funny novel will appeal to any reader who has sat at the kid table . . . or is still sitting there! |

Keeper and Kid $9.99 “ Keeper and Kid is a marvel. I dare you. Open this book and try to put it down.” ---Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Room Eight years ago, James Keeper fell in love with his upstairs neighbor in Boston, a sassy pastry chef with gray eyes and a fierce attitude. They got married, found a dog, and shopped for cilantro. But conflicting schedules and a real estate deal gone bad took its toll on the twenty-somethings in love. One divorce later, the hand-me-down chairs were separated, the potato masher custody settled, and Keeper moved to Providence to work with his best friend selling antiques at a quirky shop called Love and Death. A new job, a new love, and a new life now in place, Keeper is in a comfortable situation. Business is steady, Leah (the new love) is intriguing and passionate, and Keeper’s friends always turn up for Sunday evening Card Night. But one phone call from his former mother-in-law changes everything. And so days later, Keeper comes away with a son he never knew he had, and life all of a sudden takes on a new meaning. Leo, the precocious three-year-old who sports Keeper’s square chin, is more than a handful---he eats only round foods, refuses to bathe, thinks he’s a bear, and refers to Leah as “that man.” For a guy who never thought he’d be a parent, Keeper is thrown headfirst into fatherhood---and has no idea what to do. As Keeper and Leo adjust to the shock of each other and their suddenly very different lives, Keeper begins to let the people in his life in, in turns strange and heartwarming, funny and painful. But some, like Leah, aren’t so eager for change. In this humorous and poignant novel, Edward Hardy explores the depths of modern love, parenthood, and compromise. Keeper and Kid is the story of how a normal guy receives an unexpected gift and in turn must learn to ask more of others and himself. A coming-of-age story for the guy who thought he had already grown up, Keeper and Kid is a sharp and witty account of what we do for love. Advance Praise for Keeper and Kid “A fine, fetching novel with a good heart. Keeper is nimble and affecting, a tribute to the author’s endless comic inventiveness.”---Stewart O’Nan, author of The Good Wife “At once immensely engaging and about the things that matter most: how we love, how we move on, how the past moves with us. Lovely, wise, and surprising.”---Elizabeth Graver, author of The Honey Thief “Ed Hardy’s voice in Keeper and Kid grabs you and won’t let you go until the very last page. Full of local color, bittersweet characters, and a story we can all relate to---the day your past arrives on the doorstep of your present life.”---Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Room |

Trophy Kid $10.99 THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD Joe is the ultimate trophy kid. His adoptive parents are Hollywood’s favorite power couple, Academy Award–winning actress Greta Powell and actor/director/political candidate Robert Francis. Life with them has been one big photo-op since Joe became a war orphan at the ripe old age of three. And what better way for Greta and Robert to celebrate how far Joe’s come—and how much they’ve helped him—than for Joe to describe his experiences in a moving autobiography? Of course, Greta and Robert don’t actually intend for Joe to write the book himself. Or for him to include any unflattering details about them. That’s why they’ve hired an experienced professional for the job. But Tom Dolan is no ordinary writer, and he’s determined to help Joe tell the real story of growing up with the two most famous celebrities in America. Even if it means going back to Joe’s homeland, with his image-conscious parents in tow. . . . From the Hardcover edition. |

Kid Carolina $10.99 The Reynolds tobacco family was an American dynasty like the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Astors. R.J. "Dick" Reynolds Jr. was born into privilege and decadence, but his disastrous personal life eventually destroyed almost every relationship he cherished and stole his health at a relatively young age. Dick Reynolds was dubbed "Kid Carolina" when as a teenager, he ran away from home and stowed away as part of the crew on a freighter. For the rest of his life he'd turn to the sea, instead of his friends and family, for comfort. Dick disappeared for months at a time, leading the dual life of a business mogul and troubled soul, both of which became legendary. Despite his personal demons, Dick played a pivotal role in shaping twentieth-century America through his business savvy and politics. He developed Delta and Eastern Airlines, single handedly secured FDR's third term election, and served as mayor of Winston-Salem, where his tobacco fortune was built. Yet below the gilded surface lay a turbulent life of alcoholism, infidelity, and loneliness. His chaotic existence culminated in a surprise fourth marriage and was shortly followed by a strange death, the end of a life every bit as awe-inspiring as it was disturbing. |

Nostradamus Kid - $19.99 This genial Australian coming-of-age film is based on the experiences of its narrator, writer and director Bob Ellis. The first part of the film covers the difficulties teenaged Ken (Noah Thomas) has at a church summer camp run the the Seventh Day Adventists; he is not "with the program," and consistently asks heretical questions during prayer meetings. Also, he can't help keeping a watchful, admiring eye on a visiting preacher's pretty daughter. He gets to ditch his ultra-religious background when he goes to work at a university newspaper some six years later and, despite (or perhaps because of) his scruffy appearance, he finds himself attractive to girls. One legacy of his years at church is a pervading sense that the world may end soon, and when he insists that his new girlfriend drive him away from Sydney in her father's car because he anticipates nuclear war as a result of the Cuban Missle Crisis, it is the last straw in their relationship. Years later, now a successful film director, he runs into some of his friends from earlier days. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi |
