Butt Joints are the most basic way of joining two pieces of wood, and although it is not the strongest of joints, it is very useful in a few situations and it is a simple woodworking technique. There are some techniques that ought to be observed to assure that your butt joints are as secure as possible.
A butt joint is where one piece of stock is butted against another and fixed with glue. The joint is generally beefed up by screws or nails.
Square Cuts are the Key:
The key to a good quality butt joint is to make sure that the ends of the two boards are cut off as squarely as possible, therefore ensuring good contact. This is easiest to do by employing a mitre saw, although good quality results may be obtained by using a circular saw and a Layout Square, provided that the angle of the blade of the circular saw is set to zero-degrees.
Glue Provides the Strength:
The strength and durability of a butt joint comes from the glue in the joint. Even so, there are two problems with employing glue as the sole means of holding the joint.
First off, when glue is applied to the end grain of stock, it tends to soak into the wood far more than glue applied to the side of the grain. The end grain is the most porous part of the wood, and so you may need to apply a little more glue than you would normally.
Secondly, the glue will not provide very much in the way of lateral strength. Because of this, it is advisable to use a few screws to strengthen the joint.
If you are using hardwood for your project, be sure to pre-drill pilot holes before inserting screws into the joint, or you will split the stock and end up with a bigger problem on your hands than a feeble butt joint.
There are many possible ways to join two pieces of wood and some of those ways involve quite advanced woodworking techniques. The butt joint is a very simple joint and can be perfectly adequate in some circumstances.
