These days, when we talk about famous people from Stoke-on-Trent, the first name that appears almost always in mind is that of pop superstar Robbie Williams. Not only did Williams became a household name and local hero in Stoke, it also brought great prestige to the city as he founded a number of its Stoke songs, directly or indirectly. These include such well-known hits like "Burslem Normals" and "It's Only Us" and "Me and My Shadow, "his duet with Jonathan Wilkes. Her song "Angel" was supposedly inspired by the golden angel that adorns Hotel Burslem City.
With over 70 million records sold worldwide, the most by a British solo artist and with 15 and six ECHO BRIT Awards and a Grammy Award nomination to his credit, Williams has certainly done its part to be known as the most famous son of Stoke. Williams was elected in the United Kingdom Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and was recognized as the greatest British artist of the 1990s.
After Williams, another popular musician who is happy Stoke is associated with Slash, former guitarist of Guns N Roses and current Velvet Revolver guitarist. Widely regarded as one of the best guitarists the history of rock music, Slash has done much to raise the Stoke heritage in music. The Anglo-American musician was born in Hampstead, but grew up in Stoke beginning at an early age.
In the field of music, Stoke has produced many other famous son and daughters, including DJ and producer Andy Moore, composer Havergal Brian, singer and music hall star Gertie Gitana, singer Patricia Leonard, banjo player Jem Finer of the Rogues, the band Broken Bones punk discharge and founder Lemmy Motorhead.
Television is another area where Stoke has done more than its fair share of contributions, including producing an extraordinarily high number of TV presenters and personalities. These include big names such as Frank Bough "Time Nationwide & Breakfast," Bruno Brookes' Top of the Pops, "Anthea Turner" Blue Peter "Nick Hancock" Room 101 " and Peter Wyngarde "Fly flamingos only Tuesday."
Stoke is also proud of its contributions in the field of sport. For example, in a cemetery in downtown Hanley is a statue of Sir Stanley Matthews, English football star who is considered one of the best players that England has ever produced.
Matthews was an exceptional player as he received his knighthood when he was still active in his sport, the first and still the only footballer ever to win this distinction. It was also the first recipient of the European Footballer of the Year and the first Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awardee. Just look colorful nicknames Matthews to achieve its greatness - "The Magician" and "The Wizard of Dribble." Matthews was so good and such a unique physical specimen that he was still active in the division England football at the age of 50 years. To this day, Matthews is still considered one of the best dribbling the ball than football association has ever seen.
Outside Matthews, Stoke produced another world-class athlete who is one of the best in his sport, Phil Taylor, a winner of 13 world championships of darts and darts player the most successful in history. Burstem born in Stoke-on-Trent, Taylor ruled in as both PDC and BDO world champion. He won the PDC world championship 13 times, capturing the top prize each year since 1995 except for 2003 and 2007. Taylor also won the BDO World Championship in 1990 and 1992.
Other prominent athletes who come from Stoke include world-class footballers Mark Bright and Garth Crooks, wicketkeeper Bob Taylor, David Lynn golfer, tennis player Andrew Foster, UFC fighter Ross Pointon, a field hockey player Imran Sherwani, snooker players Dave Harold, Jamie Cope, and darts players Adrian Lewis and Ted Hankey, the latter also being a former world champion carts.
Finally, also Stoke been fertile ground for a number of heavyweights in the field of art and literature. British novelist Arnold Bennett, which some consider as the greatest realist writer of the 20th century, was born in Hanley and his novels were based mainly on everyday life in small towns especially smaller cities that includes Stoke. Besides Bennett, other writers with roots in Stoke include playwright Peter Whelan, poet Pauline Stainer, novelist and playwright Arthur Berry, poet John Wain, poet, Elijah Fenton, poet and artist and Charles Tomlinson
Meanwhile, the list of renowned artists who come from the city includes sculptors Arnold Machin and Sidney Tushingham and famous master illusionist Andrew Van Buren and actors Hugh Dancy ("Black Hawn Down"), Neil Morrissey ("Men Behaving Badly") and actor Alan Lake, Hanley Stafford, Jonathan Wikes and Freddie Jones.
