Import Guitar

In the latest installment of our 'How To' guides we take a look at using audio samples like you'll find here on DMS in Apple's Logic Pro sequencer. Logic can handle both standard WAV (.wav) samples and AIF Audio (Interchange File Format.aif).
There are two ways to import WAV samples (.wav or WAVE files) into Logic. Audio can be used either directly on audio tracks in the Arrange window, or used in the EXS24 sampler, which gives a high degree of control over the sample allowing you to play the sample from your MIDI keyboard, as well as access to the sampler's filters and envelope controls.
1) Audio Track Import.
To import an audio file directly onto an audio track in the Arrange window create a new audio track by clicking the (+) button on the top left of the window. From the New Tracks dialogue box select Audio and then choose Stereo from the Format drop down menu. This will create a new audio track for you.
You may now drag and drop from an OS X Finder window directly onto the new audio track or use Logic's Media Browser (located on the right hand side of the screen.
Quick Tip: If you're using looped wav files then make sure you set Logic's tempo to matches that of the audio loop. If you're unsure of the tempo of the loop set your cycle locators around the loop and from the Options Menu select Tempo and then choose 'Adjust Tempo using Region Length and Locators'. This will give you the option of adjust Logic's global tempo to that of the loop.
2) EXS24 Sampler Import.
Create a new Instrument track and insert an EXS24 Sampler. From the EXS24 front panel click the Edit button (on the top right of the EXS24). This will bring up the Instrument Editor. Now choose your audio sample and drag and drop into the Instrument Editor window. If you know the musical key of the audio sample enter it into the Pitch section of the Editor. This will ensure that the sample is played in the correct key. The fastest way to save your new instrument and get playing is to click the Close button on the top right of the Instrument Editor window, this will bring up a Save dialogue box allowing you to give the new Sampler Instrument a name and save it into your Logic Sampler Instruments folder (this is the default location).

Fingers [Import] $47.99 The 1970s were banner years for Airto Moreira--not only because of his association with Chick Corea's Return to Forever and his work on wife Flora Purim's Milestone dates, but also, because of the generally superb work he did under Creed Taylor's supervision at CTI from 1972-74. One of the five-star gems that the Brazilian percussionist recorded for CTI was Fingers, which employs Purim on percussion and vocals, David Amaro on guitar, Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorge Fattoruso on drums and Ringo Thielmann on electric bass. Produced by Taylor and recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's famous New Jersey studio, this LP demonstrates just how exciting and creative 1970s fusion could be. When Moreira and his colleagues blend jazz with Brazilian music, rock and funk on such cuts as "Wind Chant," "Tombo in 7/4" and "Romance of Death," the results are consistently enriching. Fingers is an album to savor. ~ Alex Henderson |

Insurgentes [Import] $79.99 It caused a stir when it was announced: Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree and No-Man fame) was to release his first-ever full-length solo album. The first question to pop up was: why? After a couple decades of activity under his belt, and two handfuls of bands and projects past and present (including several solo outfits, like Bass Communion), why would he release an album under his own name, and what would that album be like? Well, as it turned out, Insurgentes is basically a Porcupine Tree album in which Wilson wrote all the songs and made all the decisions, including the one to not include all current members of Porcupine Tree in the project. Is that a problem, fans might ask? Not at all. In fact, Insurgentes is an excellent slab of progressive-tinged alternative rock, and a logical next step from Fear of a Blank Planet, PT's last album at this point. The songwriting is sharp and punchy in the short tracks, and atmospheric and contrasted in the longer ones (the wall-of-guitar entry in "No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun"), with maybe a tad bit more input from Wilson's experimental project Bass Communion filtering through in the textures department. Despite featuring only Wilson and PT drummer Gavin Harrison, the leadoff track, "Harmony Korine," would have been perfect as a hit single for the next Porcupine Tree record. "Abandoner" is Wilson at his creepy best: stark electronica beat, aerial vocals, and twisted ambience (enhanced in the 5.1 surround mix version by a tricky placement of acoustic guitar attack and backward effect). Theo Travis guests on flute on this track. Other guest musicians include Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess delivering a stunning piano solo in "No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun," King Crimson bassist Tony Levin, singer Clodagh Simonds (of Fovea Hex) adding wordless vocals to "Significant Other," and Michiyo Yagi on koto (a Japanese traditional zither-like instrument) on the title track. Accessible yet boundary-pushing (in a pop/rock format), Insurgentes is one of Wilson's finer moments. And it must be heard in 5.1 surround sound for its full richness to be experienced, as the man has become a master of the surround mix. ~ Fran?ois Couture |

Dois [Import] $17.99 C ssio Gava's second release strikes the listener from the start -- it's an unusual sound. Gava doesn't seem too concerned with contemporary production trends, opting instead for an intense use of real orchestral musicians, which gives his work an aura of originality. His melodies are simple but communicative. The arrangements (all written by him) curiously evoke the Festivals period, with all that grandiloquence and excessive notes that impede transparency and multidimensionality, making everything sound plain. They would profit from a more simple and economic approach. Also they are too conservative, too diatonic harmonically. Nevertheless, his talent is evident in songs like "Ora?ao Para Um Deus Distante" (Gava), which denotes Edu Lobo influences; "Toada" (lyrics by Zeca Baleiro), with armorial influences in the beautiful and simple melodic line; "Dia Dia Di " (Gava/J. C. Costa Netto), which has some Joao Bosco "quotes" in the vocals and violao (Brazilian acoustic guitar) playing, soon giving room for a bossa very much in the Toquinho/Vin cius de Moraes style; "Meu N mero" (Fernando Forni/?lio Camalle/Gava), a light pop song with interesting modulations; "O Risco" (Gava), with its very angular melodic line in ballad format; "Louco Era Eu" (Gava), which is inscribed in the very Brazilian valse tradition; and the melody of the frevo "O Dom" (Gava/Luiz Tatit), which supports Tatit's lyrics with simplicity. ~ Alvaro Neder |

Zumbi [Import] $22.99 From nowhere, it seems, Andrea Marquee emerges as one of the most interesting and adventurous singers in Brazilian popular music. Her debut, which features plenty of her own compositions like the edgy "Cantos de Trabalho," manages to be both accessible and adventurous -- a skill that seems common in Brazil, but which she raises to high art on tracks like "Balanco," which is in turns lush, almost industrial, and ambient, while retaining the flavor of samba -- no mean feat. More than any of the younger wave of Brazilian artists, she shows herself capable of mixing beats with the airy manner of bossa and samba in an utterly natural and unselfconscious manner. It finds a high point on her version of Caetano Veloso's "A Voz Do Morto," with drum and bass patterns and effects adding tension under mandolin and flute in the most delightful way, never getting bogged down, before exploding into her own "Sambadelic," with its Hendrix-type lead guitar that resolves itself as a samba, with her voice fluttering birdlike over the top. It's notable that, in addition to Veloso, she includes material from one of Brazil's other leading writers, Jorge Ben; indeed, her cover of "Zumbi" is almost a blueprint for the album, seamlessly melding beats, acoustic instruments, and subtle moods and textures. For all its transparency, however, Marquee does preserve a slight air of mystery about herself -- who is she, and where did this talent come from? Ultimately, it really doesn't matter when the music's of this quality. Full marks to producers Apollo 9 and Mauricio Tagliari -- who seem to have contributed a lot -- for what they bring sonically. But the unifying vision appears to be Marquee's and, if she can continue with this standard and a similar sense of adventure, it's only a matter of a short time before she's one of Brazil's leading musical artists. ~ Chris Nickson |
