The Guitar Lady – An Inspiration to Us All

 

 

 

From tragedy came many inspirational songs from the lady guitar player, Beth Nielsen Chapman was born September 14th 1956 in Harlingen, Texas, and is an American singer songwriter, mostly known for her numerous hits recorded by country and pop music performers, she who suffered  the loss of her husband Ernest Chapman back in 1994 to cancer, Chapman had several popular songs  in the charts as a contemporary artist, such as; I keep coming back to you, Walk my way, The moment you were mine  and All I have.

Her 1997 album Sand and Water helped Beth deal with such a great loss, and as she began to come out of the despair and started to look to the future, during the recording of the Deeper Still album her own fate was in fact following the path of her late husband, and the guitar lady herself was diagnosed with the dreaded disease, and the future seemed less than certain.

Thankfully the breast cancer was caught just in time, but she still had to endure twelve months of chemo and radio therapy.

When interviewed back in 2003 Beth said "the sand and water was my own therapy, and that album was centered on getting over grief and trauma at that time, the music seemed to help other people too.''  Beth started to play guitar at the age of 11 and soon began to write songs, touring clubs up and down the country to make a living; playing songs from the Beatles and another famous guitar lady Joni Mitchell.

Influenced by many singer song writers, she said "I learnt almost everything Joni Mitchell ever played on guitar." Not being able to read music was no handicap, and the success of her songs was a credit to her, typically she would write a song constructed from a melody, and then work on the chord structure (progression)  

When asked what instrument do you use to write record or play on stage? Beth commented; a favorite guitar of mine is an old Martin that I bought in 76, wrote pretty much all my sons on it, I'm also using a guitar called the Huss and Dalton, I had several custom made whilst working in Virginia, Beth continued; Taylors are excellent quality guitars, I am looking at getting one soon, I've recently acquired a guitar by Jim Olson a beautiful thing, still new, it thinks its still a piece of wood, but I am still breaking it in, and will sound incredible one day.

Beth Nielsen Chapman offered one of her much sought after songwriting workshops last September 2010, in the town of Milton Keynes England. Focusing in on creativity and development of song writing, the would be songwriters from all over the UK benefited from the guitar lady's exceptional and stimulating teaching style, 

 

Her talent is well known and in demand these days as a songwriting teacher, she teaches all over the world and is considered to be one of the finest singer and songwriters of her generation. She has written numerous songs for a large selection of artists including, Bet Midler, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Olivia Newton-John and Willie Nelson. Beth's own music has been a big hit in the charts, on television and in films; she continues to inspire us all to shine through our own talent.  Beth Nielson Chapman the guitar lady committed herself to the people and the music she so loved, and in doing so she gave inspiration to us all and to young musicians all over the world.
