When setting up your guitar pedal board, you are more than likely to spend hours and hours in the shop trying to decide which pedals you need in order to pull an awesome sound with your guitar/amp combination.

As tempting as it is to buy every pedal in the shop, you will most likely only be able to afford a few pedals when starting out.

So to help, here is a list of the top 3 pedals every guitarist needs.

1. Tuner: A tuner is the most important pedal in my opinion. If you aren't playing in tune, than it's going to sound bad full stop. One of my favourite tuners is a bright Korg LED style tuner. A really simple tuner that is really easy to see when you look down at your board. There is nothing worse than no being able to read the tuner when it's dark on stage.
2. Overdrive Pedal: I once heard a guitarist say, "A good overdrive pedal is like a favorite pair of old jeans." This is true in so many ways. A good overdrive pedal should be a staple part of the guitarists tone.
   Classic examples of this pedal include the Ibanez Tube Screamer and the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff. A few more modern effects pedals incorporate valves, but usually these still run at voltages that are too low for the valve, resulting in a "starved plate" configuration that generates harsh and buzzy distortion. Distortion pedals usually also provide signal gain, which can be used to drive the input stage of the pre-amplifier harder, resulting in further distortion and, in some cases, higher volume.
3. Delay Pedal: A delay takes a sound and repeats it back without altering its tone or pitch, like an echo. You can alter the time between each repetition, measured in thousandths of a second, or milliseconds. Available in Analogue or Digital. The most obvious example is The Edge of U2, whose classic guitar parts couldn't have been written without a delay pedal.

In summary, there is no right or wrong when choosing guitar pedals. One of my favourite aspects of the music industry, is that someone is always trying something new and breaking the 'traditional' rules. That being said, with these 3 pedals you should be able to pull most good sounds with the right amp/guitar combination.

The Analogizer is the antidote to harsh and lifeless sounding digital pedals.The ANALOGIZER can be used in combination with other effects devices. Experiment with any combination to develop your own unique sound. The footswitch toggles between effect and true bypass modes.GAIN Controls the input gain of your ANALOGIZER. The available gain ranges from 0 dB to +"+26dB. As you turn the GAIN knob clockwise, the GAIN increases.SPREAD Controls the delay time of the ANALOGIZER. The delay time range is from 3.5 mS to 65 mS. As you turn the SPREAD knob clockwise, the delay time increases. The input impedance presented at the INPUT jack is 1 M.AMP JACK Connect the AMP jack to your amplifier input or the input of another effects pedal. This is the output of the ANALOGIZERSTATUS LED and FOOTSWITCH When the STATUS LED is lit, the ANALOGIZER is in effect mode. When the LED is off, the ANALOGIZER is in true bypass mode. Use the FOOTSWITCH to toggle between the two modes.The ANALOGIZER comes supplied with a 9 Volt battery. The ANALOGIZER can also be powered from a 9VDC AC Adapter capable of delivering at least 20mA. The power supply must have a barrel connector with a center negative plug. The optional 9V power supply from Electro-Harmonix is 9.6DC-200BI (same as used by Boss® & Ibanez®).

Electro-Harmonix Switchblade+ Channel Selector Footswitch $47.4 The Switchblade+ offers a convenient solution to a players switching needs. Route your signal to either output A or B, or send it to both at once. Connect a tuner or effects pedal to its dedicated Tuner output. With a fully passive audio path and active LED indication, the new Switchblade+ is your utilitarian sidekick. Controls A/B Footswitch (LED) Press this switch to route the input signal to either OUT A (Red LED) or OUT B (Green LED).A+B Footswitch (LED) Press this switch to route the input signal to both OUT A and OUT B. When A+B is engaged (Red LED), the A/B Footswitch has no effect on the signal path. I/O INPUT Connect the output of your instrument or another effects pedal to this jack.TUNER Connect this jack to the input of a tuner device or another effects pedal. This jack is hardwired to the INPUT jack and provides a direct output regardless of the state of the unit.OUT A Connect this jack to the input of an amplifier or the input of another effects pedal. Depending on the state of the A/B and A+B controls, this jack will output either the direct input signal or no signal. When the A/B LED is lit red or the A+B LED is lit up, OUT A is selected.OUT B Connect this jack to the input of an amplifier or the input of another effects pedal. Depending on the state of the A/B and A+B controls, this jack will output either the direct input signal or no signal. When the A/B LED is lit green or the A+B LED is lit up, OUT B is selected. Power -The SWITCHBLADE+ can be powered by a 9V battery or a 9VDC battery eliminator capable of delivering at least 16mA. The optional 9V power supply from Electro-Harmonix is 9.6DC-200BI (same as used by Boss® & Ibanez®) 9.6 Volts DC 200mA. The power supply must have a barrel connector with center negative.The SWITCHBLADE+ can also operate without power, since the audio path is fully passive. With no power, however, the LED indication will not function.When A+B is engaged, the input impedance at the INPUT jack is equal to 50k in parallel with the combined input impedances of the devices connected to the TUNER, OUT A, and OUT B jacks. When A+B is not engaged, the input impedance at the INPUT jack is equal to 100k in parallel with the combined input impedances of the devices connect to the TUNER jack and OUT A or OUT B.
