The Washburn D10S has a good sound, amazing playability, solid durability, and unbeatable price.
Guitar maker Washburn maintains that their D10 series is actually the top selling acoustic guitar in the entire world, which is a pretty big claim once you see all the options that guitar players have these days. However, once you actually pick one up and play it, Washburn's claim becomes a bit more understandable (and believable).
Features
The D10S is outfitted with a solid spruce top, mahogany back, sides, and neck (rosewood bridge and fingerboard). Our model came with a glossy black finish with matching pickguard. Tuners are Grover-style and encase in chrome. The D10S also sports a multi-lam top and neck binding as well as a diamond inlay marquette rosette. A hardshell is standard, as is the Buzz Feiten Tuning System.
Performance
We review numerous high end guitars from makers like Martin, Taylor, Takamine, and Gibson on a regular basis, and so we know a good guitar when we play one. Nevertheless, it's the Chinese-made Washburn D10S that receives the bulk of our daily attention, since it's used for a lot of our daily practice work (i.e. scale patterns, chord voicing, warm-up exercises).
It might be what you call a "beater" guitar. We leave it out all the time and don't really attend to its basic needs, unfortunately. If it gets dropped, kicked, dinged, or otherwise abused, then so be it. Oddly enough, though, this beater guitar eventually became something more.
Believe it or not, the Washburn D10S became one of our favorite guitars. We played around with it so much that we realized what a great guitar it was, especially for the price. Sure, it doesn't have the same full-bodied sound as a Taylor or Takamine.
But you have to remember that this guitar only costs around $300. It really does sound pretty good, especially for a laminated guitar, but its greatest feature is the playability. It has the action of a guitar that costs $2,000, and that's no joke. Because of its construction, it's also pretty tough. We wouldn't dream of treating a $2,000 guitar the way we treat this one, but the D10S handles temperature and humidity changes with no problems at all.
The D10S also has the honor of being one of the few Chinese-made guitars that we reviewed. Honestly, we're always hesitant to review a Chinese-made instrument just because their reputation for reliability in guitar construction just isn't that great. However, if they keep churning out guitars like the Washburn D10S, this reputation will certainly change!
If you're a guitar teacher or in a position to recommend a guitar, you get asked to recommend beginner-level instruments often. If you're asked to recommend a beginner guitar, don't hesitate to recommend the D10S. We know of no students who've bought this instrument who have regretted their purchase.
The Bottom Line
The Washburn D10S is a rare instrument in that it can be appreciated by both beginners and advanced players. It has a good sound, amazing playability, solid durability, and unbeatable price. We recommend it highly.
