Those brand new cymbals sure do look nice when they come freshly packed, straight from the box don't they? The light reflects brilliantly off the finish and you just can't wait to throw it on the stand and start slamming away on them.
The only problem is that it doesn't take very long for them to loose that brand new shine and quickly get the not so new look to them. The bright luster of your brand new cymbals will soon begin to fade away. Fortunately though, you can dig around your house, get a couple materials and get to work making those cymbals look almost new again.
First off, take a quick look and decide how much of a good cleaning they really might need. You should check the grooves in the cymbals for dirt. If it doesn't appear that there is any dirt in the grooves and it just looks a bit dirty or dingy, you will probably be alright giving your cymbals a simple polish. If there is dirt in the grooves however, it might be a good time for a nice deep cleaning.
Now would be a good time to mention that many of the manufacturers like, Sabian or Meinl Percussion, produce their very own cleaners that are perfect for those old splashes or even that brand new ride cymbal you might have recently purchased. Sabian however, does recommend that you clean around the logo, since the cymbal cleaner could possibly, completely erase the logo.
If you have decided to do a deep cleaning on your cymbals, it is a good idea to follow the grooves as you wipe them down as opposed to cleaning up and down from the edge to the bell. Soaking the cymbal for a while, say a couple of hours, will always help if you are finding that the grime and dirt are just not coming off.
Also make sure to use a fairly soft cloth to wipe the cymbals down with, and not something that will most definitely scrape your cymbals up like a steel-wool pad.
Any cymbal that requires a good polish will be just fine with cymbal cleaner, however, if you want to get the really nice extra shine out of them, use a little car wax or something like all-natural lemon juice. The gleam will return if you are diligent to constantly buff and polish your cymbals.
While the optimum way to restore the gleam of any cymbal would be to not get it dirty in the first place, that is next to impossible if you play them on a constant basis. Just from sitting out in an open environment, they will be exposed to dust in the air, oil from the hands of someone that touches the cymbal, and possibly smoke from anyone who smokes.
Another thing I should mention is that any water left on the cymbals will cause whats called oxidation, and that basically means the cymbal will begin to rust. It won't ruin the sound from the cymbal but what it will do is make that cymbal far less shiny than it once was.
It might not be a bad idea to make a weekly or semi-weekly habit of busting out the cleaning supplies and giving them a quick wipe-down. It really only takes about five or ten minutes and will really help to keep the cymbals looking great.
If you carry your cymbals around at all make sure you are using a well constructed hard-shelled case, and when you are playing, try to always use felt between the cymbal and the stand. This will help protect against those nasty cracks, and any wear that begins to form over the cymbals.
