Many times when you finally learn a song, it just doesn't quite sound right on your guitar. It has nothing to do with you playing the song incorrectly. It's just that your guitar's tone isn't the same as in the song. There are simple guitar tone tips to help change the sound of your guitar. Some are simple and cheap while others a bit more complex.

Change your pick.

This is one of the easiest ways of changing the sound of your guitar. Different thickness and even materials will significantly change the sound of your instrument. Consider that different guitar styles tends to have a certain size pick so be sure to check out the one you need for the styles you are learning.

Change your strings.

New strings have a more tin sounding tone while old ones can be more warm or even "dead" sounding. There are also string sizes that will change the tone. Thing of it this way. When playing an A on the thick E string, it sounds much different than playing the A string. It's the same note, but the string size changes everything.

Change your touch.

Touch is important to getting certain sounds. A softer touch or more aggressive touch might be the difference you are looking for.

Change your equipment.

You may need a different style guitar to get the tones you want. Even the woods a guitar is made up of and whether it's a bolt on or one solid piece makes the difference. A cheaper method than getting a whole new guitar is to consider replacing the pickups.

Different amps and effects pedals will change sound. Obviously the more expensive ones tend to grant wider options and clarity in sound. A multi-effects pedal under the $80 range is one of the best ways on the cheap to get different sounds.
