One of the new concepts revealed in the Jazz Guitar Chord System is the use of a "Root Line". First off, lets make clear that the root line is different from the bass line. The bass note refers to the lowest note within the chord, and while it is very common to have the same note for both the root and the bass, there are instances when the root note of the chord and the bass note are different. Those instances are referred to as inversions. Simply put, an inverted chord is a form whose bass note and root note are different. There are 3 different inversions given for every chord type. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd inversion.

The chord charts that are used in the Jazz Guitar Chord System make learning and using inversions simple. For every chord type (Ex: Cm7b5) there are 6 different forms or shapes. The shapes whose root note is on the 6th, 5th, and 4th strings are the root position shapes (chords whose root note and bass note are the same). The forms whose root note is on the 2nd string are in 1st inversion (3rd of the chord in the bass). The forms whose root note is on the 3rd string are in 2nd inversion (5th of the chord in the bass). The forms whose root note is on the 1st string are in 3rd inversion (7th of the chord in the bass).

Inverted chords, when written, are often referred to as "slash chords" (Ex: Fmaj7/C). The chord type in our example is telling us we need an Fmaj7 chord with the note /C in the bass. First we realize that C is the 5th of an Fmaj7 chord, which tells us we are playing in 2nd inversion (because having the 5th of the chord in the bass puts the chord into 2nd inversion). By using the Jazz Guitar Chord System you can figure how to play this chord easily. Already knowing that all 2nd inversion chords have the root note on the 3rd string, all we have to do is locate the note F on the 3rd string (10th fret), and play the maj7 chord form that corresponds. Instantly Fmaj7/C!!

Learning to create a "Root Line" is a great way to improve your chart sight reading as well as improvise and vary your chord progressions. This can be done simply by taking the root note of the chords in your progression and plotting them along the fretboard in any direction. With some practice, the guitarist will begin to use the most economical chord shapes as well as step away from traditional root position harmonies.
