This article is written to show you some of the most common mistakes that new guitar players make when learning to play heavy metal guitar. By writing this article, I hope to address some of the most common mistakes that haunt many players starting out on heavy metal guitar playing.

One of the most common issues that I see with new guitar players playing heavy stuff is that they are not using the distortion guitar effects properly. Very often, metal guitarists tend to overuse the distortion pedals by tweaking the distortion knob to the maximum. Unknowingly, the more they try to make the guitar sound heavier, the more they are trying to kill off their own guitar tone.

You may wonder why and how a new beginner guitarist may kill his own guitar tone without proper knowledge of his effects pedal. Most guitar players in metal playing are guilty of turning up the distortion on their pedals way too high. This is a common phenomenon amongst rock guitar players and thrash guitar players. What they do not know is that by tuning up the distortion too high, they lose the ability to properly accent their guitar playing.

Tuning up the distortion to insane amount of levels will kill off the guitar attack and dynamics that you have. A cool sounding riff or guitar rhythm will lose its dynamics because the notes would have been blended too much together. This results in a very muddled sound that has no definition at all. For those who don't know what this means, this means that your music will become monotonous and boring.
