Electric Sound Products, known as ESP, developed in Tokyo Japan in 1975 as a company that supplied custom replacement pieces for electric guitars. Conversely, the first ESP guitar was not created until 1976. ESP Guitars and replacement parts remained to be sold exclusively in Japan for nearly ten years prior to moving into the U.S. marketplace. In 1983 their replacement parts ended up being made available in the United States. At last, in 1984 their electric guitars made their American appearance.

In 1984 - 1985 ESP Guitars were getting some interest from celebrated musicians like Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones) and Vernon Reid (Living Colour).

The next big guitarist to discover ESP Guitars was George Lynch of Dokken, while searching for guitar parts as he was on tour in Japan. When George discovered that ESP built custom electric guitars, the prototype "Kamikaze" was crafted for him. The Kamikaze was the earliest signature model to be made.

Soon after, more players started to take notice of ESP and started jamming on their guitars in the late 1980's. Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield of Metallica were 2 of the bigger names.

In fact, talking about James Hetfield, an ESP guitar which he played when Metallica originally began to turn out to be popular, got the ESP Company into some legal issues. The electric guitar he played, called the EXP, was a duplicate of the Gibson Explorer. Even though guitar companies were selling replicas of their guitars for many years, Gibson chose to sue ESP Guitars. The craftsmanship of the EXP guitar was so fine that players had been buying them up and this was apparently cutting into the sales of Gibson's guitars. Finally, ESP lost the lawsuit and changed their design to the now known 'EX' design.

In mid 2002, ESP sales began to grow at a swift rate making them one of the fastest rising companies at that period. This growth in gross sales was directly linked to Fender buying out Jackson Guitars. Jackson was the company that ESP Guitars was competing with in the 1980's and 90's the buy-out of Jackson Guitars, most of the big profile guitarists jumped ship and went over to ESP. Guitar players like Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, found it an easy transition to move over to ESP Guitars due to the prime quality and similar thrash-metal aggressive designs.

ESP guitars are nonetheless highly regarded today. At the 2008 Winter NAMM show, ESP introduced over fifty new guitar and bass models. Additionally they have an excellent number of soaring profile guitar players on their list including Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield of Metallica, Wayne Static of Static-X, Alexi Laiho Children of Bodom, Will Adler of Lamb of God, Ron Wood, George Lynch, and the latest member, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi. With the good high quality that ESP create, its a no-brainer to recognize they will be around for many many more years to come.
