Three chord guitar progressions (tricks) are essentially the building blocks of all progressions of music. Practice them over and over and you will eventually get so "musically tuned" that your ear and hands will automatically know where the songs' chord progression or sequence is going to.
You often hear musicians speak as though professionals: "What key is it in?" and someone answers "C" and you, as a beginner, of course, have no clue as to what chord comes next in the Guitar progression or sequence.
Most popular music evolved from the blues:
A three chord format that evolved into basic Rock 'n Roll, an example of which are:
E - A - B7 or G - C - D
The three chords are: written in Roman Numerals:
(I) Tonic: the tonal centre which provides a harmonic point of reference.
(IV) The Sub-dominant or secondary chord
(V) The Dominant or major chord.
A progression in C major for example the three guitar chords will be:
C - F - G
If you pitch a song in D major the three guitar chords will be:
D - G - A
To identify the other two guitar chords in a blues progression or three chord guitar trick, work out which is the fourth and fifth note above the Root note you have chosen to begin the pattern.
Tonic: Dominant: Sub-dominant:
A............... E7............... Dm
Em............ B7............... Am
Dm............ A7.............. Gm
G............... D7.............. C
C............... G7.............. F
D............... A7.............. G
A............... E7............... D
Try this 4 chord profression - used in many folk songs: C....Am....F....G
If you want to know when to change from chord to chord, the Chord is written above the Word in the song sentence, as the example below:
