In art, the best that you can do is to use it to express yourself. As a guitar player, you should not stop at learning how to play the instrument but aspire to use it as something to convey a message to your audience.
Earlier associations of the word, artist, would give you a picture of somebody who has established his position in the music industry. An artist is one who is well-learned and has earned reputation for coming up with really great musical pieces. But that was in the old days. When you really analyze the meaning, the importance here is to be able to convey a message to those who will listen to your music. The mark of a true artist is to be able to incorporate one's self into the medium through the instrument that he uses.
The first step that you must make in order to become an artist is to stop referring to yourself as a guitarist or a guitar player. It would be much better if you will see yourself as a musician, for starters. You may not be really good right now, but at least you are learning to become one. Music becomes your medium and the guitar becomes your instrument. The artist is no one else but yourself. Starting today, you will refer to yourself as an artist rather than a mere guitar player. This, in effect, will cause people to get a different and more respectable impression of what you do and who you are. If you are asked to provide more details, you simply say that you use music as your medium and the guitar as your instrument. It's pretty simple. You can't stop and accept the fact that you can play the guitar. You have to make sure that you make music with your guitar. This way of seeing yourself will reflect in the way you play music and emanate in the music that you create.
Since you have already established that you are an artist, the next thing to do is to become one. You have to start visualizing what you would like to create. Start with some riffs and melodies that you can come up with. When you have found something that you really like, trim it down or add more to it. You can be like a sculptor who visualizes what he can do with a slab of marble and then starts trimming down what he doesn't need in order to come up with something admirable. This is destructive creation for you.
In your terms, as mentioned earlier, you can begin with some chord patterns and riffs. You can go for hours and days coming up with something that you would really like until you can actually "stumble upon" something that you are satisfied with. You will notice that there will be more times that you will not like what you come up with.
The more difficult part comes around when you have to start connecting the verses and the choruses. You will have to come up with a way to weave them together beautifully. You can do this with detail or with a simple interlude. And frankly, musicians need a lot of help when it comes to detailing. So, this becomes a real challenge to your creativity. You can crank it up to work full-time on this. You can incorporate the transitions with riffs and chord patterns. When you're done, you can start fine tuning your work. The end results will definitely satisfy you and surely say something about yourself. This will be your brainchild, borne from your work and your efforts.
