Ever wonder how parents of screaming babies survive? I remember when my first child was born 9 years ago, she was a caulic baby who screamed at the top of her lungs with every car ride. She had quite a set of lungs and no matter what we did, the moment we put her into the car seat she would begin screaming without stopping until we arrived. Short trip or long, it was hell and I will be the first to say it.
My husband who has always been an excellent driver, accidentally ran a red light one day because of our baby daughters constant screaming. A police car happened to be right behind us and when he pulled our car over, both my husband and I jumped out. Apparently, that was not the best thing to do when you are being pulled over, and the officer put his hand on his gun ordered us both back into the vehicle.
When he cautiously approached our car, he saw our beautiful, red faced screaming 3 month old daughter in the back seat. Her scream was deafening, and after only a few minutes, the officer said, "I am going to give you a warning this time, because you are going to suffer for the rest of your lives."
We were happy about not getting a ticket, but worried about his words. This was our first child, and we really struggled with her behavior in the car. I feared we would never be able to drive anywhere ever again. She eventually grew out of this horrible phase, but it took months and our nerves were completely shot.
After looking back at the experience, we decided to find a way to avoid this from ever happening to us again as well as help other parents overcome a back seat screamer. There are some good tips available to help with a screaming baby, and although not all of them will work for each baby, if a parent can find one method that works, even partially, it is better than having to endure the suffering. Here are some methods we have tried that worked for our babies, and some others that may also work for yours:
- Toys - Some children are stimulated by cool toys. Find some colorful, sparkly, plush, baby age appropriate toys that will captivate your babies attention and turn screaming into pleasant cooing and laughter noises. Try finger puppets, toys that light up, textured toys and teethers, hot and cold packs, etc.
- Aroma Therapy - Works great for parent too. Try providing your child with a cloth that has lavender scent on it. There are many different aromas to choose from, and some are more calming than others so be sure to try several different scents to see which your baby prefers. We discovered that a scented lavender stuffed eye mask was the key to altering our teething daughters screaming on a 3 day road trip into pleasant baby sounds in the back seat. She hugged, squeezed, and rubbed the plush mask to her face for miles until she finally fell asleep. What a beautiful moment it was when we finally found what activated her off switch.
- Music - There are many audio books that can be used during your drive that help promote sleeping, as well as calming the children. Sleepy Time Narrated by Jim Weiss is a great one that works for our family, and there are so many others too. Classical music from composers like Mozart, Handel and Vivaldi are always a hit with our little ones too. If your baby is on sensory overload, adding music may only compound the problem though, so be aware of your particular situation and sensitive to your babies needs.
- Take breaks - You may simply need to pull over and take more rest stops if you are on a long drive. We found that by stopping every two hours, we were able to create a routine on a 6 day drive with the kids. They new that they would be able to take a break from the driving to play, snack, and feel the sun on their faces for 15 or 20 minutes. It seemed to calm everyone and give us all a moment to recharge before the next 2 hour drive.
- Time - Our baby daughter finally stopped screaming when she was old enough to be facing forward in her car seat. There was something about being faced backwards in her infant seat that caused her to scream constantly. It may have had something to do with the movement of the vehicle, ear pressure, or her own disposition. We tried putting up a mirror, mobiles, music, even having Mom sit next to her while Dad drove, but nothing worked until she was old enough to be in a forward facing car seat.
Dealing with a screaming baby can be one of the hardest child raising experiences there is. If you do your homework and setup some practice runs, you may be able to locate a solution to help keep your babies screaming to a minimum. Always remember that feeding, changing, and babies comfort should be the first thing to look at when baby is screaming. When you have determined that it is not one of the basic needs that is causing your baby's screaming, try the steps provided to see if you can find one that will help your littlest traveler and everyone else in the near vicinity have a pleasant journey.

Screamer $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The screamers are a small family of birds, the Anhimidae. For a long time they were thought to be related to the Galliformes because of similar bills, but they are truly related to ducks, most closely to the Magpie Goose which some DNA evidence suggests are closer to screamers than to ducks. The family is exceptional within the living birds in lacking uncinate processes of ribs. The three species occur only in South America, ranging from Venezuela to northern Argentina. They are large, bulky birds, with a small downy head, long legs and large feet which are only partially webbed. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F.
