Getting to Know Hotch in Criminal Minds
Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner is a fictional character from the CBS crime drama series Criminal Minds, played by Thomas Gibson. The character is a Supervisory Special Agent within the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, and has appeared from the series' first episode, originally broadcast on September 22, 2005. Hotch begins the series married to his high school sweetheart Haley (Meredith Monroe). They have a son named Jack (Cade Owens), though they later divorce over Hotch's dedication to his job. Meredith Monroe's character is later killed off in the 2009/2010 season.
Hotch first met his future wife Haley Brooks in high school. They married soon thereafter, and were initially happy together. Before joining the FBI, Hotch worked as a prosecutor for the District Attorney's office. He has a younger brother named Sean (Eric Johnson), a New York City-based chef. His mother is an alumna of Mary Baldwin College - home of the Fighting Squirrels - in Staunton, VA (see "Blood Hungry" episode). Their father was a workaholic lawyer who survived cancer, and suffered a heart attack aged 47, dying while Sean was still a child.
Upon joining the FBI, Hotch was initially assigned to the Field Office in Seattle, Washington, before transferring to Quantico, Virginia.
In season 1 episode 8, as Hotchner talks to a killer, it is implied that Hotchner was abused by his father. He tells the unsub, "After enduring such abuse, it's not surprising that some people grow up to become killers." The unsub asks, "What about the rest?" to which Hotch replies, "They grow up to catch them."
Following the birth of his son Jack, Hotch's work with the BAU begins to disrupt his family life. Following a two-week suspension in 2007, he requests a transfer to a different division, which pleases Haley, until he is convinced by Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) to help the team with a case in Milwaukee. He changes his mind about leaving the department, and when he returns home, he finds that Haley has taken Jack and left him. He is later served with divorce papers at work.
At the beginning of the show's fourth season, Hotch is caught in a terrorist car bombing outside the New York City Federal Plaza. He suffers shrapnel wounds and a punctured ear drum which results in hyperacusis, causing temporary hearing problems.
Later in the season, the team work on an old case of Hotch's, identifying George Foyet (C. Thomas Howell) as a serial killer known as the Boston Reaper.
Foyet stabs Hotch nine times before delivering him to hospital. Although Hotch survives, Foyet takes Haley and Jack's address from Hotch's apartment, requiring them to be placed in protective custody and unable to contact Hotch until Foyet is caught.
Hotchner proceeds to hunt the Reaper with the help of the BAU. Haley is fooled by the Reaper, posing as a US Marshall, and she is lured into her house and shot. Hotchner arrives at the scene to see Haley is dead in the bedroom, using a bedroom mirror he locates Foyet hiding behind the curtains.
Hotch shoots the Reaper who is wearing a bullet-proof vest and remains unharmed. The two then engage in a bloody fight, during which Foyet threats once he is finished with him, he will find his "bastard son", and show the child his dead parents right before he kills the boy. This angers Hotch, giving him the strength to subdue Foyet, who realizes he is beaten and surrenders to Agent Hotchner.
However an enraged Hotch, afraid for his son's life and angered by his wife's death, savagely and mercilessly beats the serial killer to death. Morgan stops Hotchner who is still beating the now dead Foyet. Hotch eventually finds Jack, safe in a chest located in room that was once his former home office. Hotchner later cradles a dead Haley in his arms.
During an inquiry by Section Chief Strauss, when asked the question of what Hotchner believed would have happened if Foyet had been able to get up, Hotch responds, "I don't have to think; I know that he would have tried to kill my son too." Chief Strauss, visibly shaken by what Hotchner has gone through (and the danger posed by Foyet) decides his actions were totally justified. Hotch took time off to grieve his ex-wife's death and spend time with his son, Jack.
Hotch speaks at Haley's funeral. It is clear that Jack, obviously, is missing his mother, and is comforted to sleep in his dad's bed. Hotch was offered complete retirement from the BAU in order to be with his son. Haley's sister, Jessica, offered to stay with Jack when Hotch had to go away, for Haley. Hotch agrees and decides to go back to the BAU.
