Most beginner guitarists don't think about what type of guitar strings they are playing on, until the time comes for the first change of strings. This can be because of a broken string, dull sound, or a number of reasons. There are many types of strings available for the electric guitar, with terms like roundwound, Monel, heavy gauge, light, Nickel, flatwound, etc, which can be somewhat intimidating for beginner electric guitar players.
Here is some practical advice for you if you are in this situation:
- Get nickel plated guitar strings. They are the cheapest and most suitable in sound for beginners. Of course, after getting to an intermediate level of playing, you can start experimenting with different materials as well.
- The "gauge" indication defines the thickness of the strings, in 10 thousandths of an inch thickness.
- Get light-medium gauge strings (9-10 gauge) if you play mostly lead guitar. They'll be easy on your fingers, making those bends, vibratos, and other techniques easier to carry out while you are still developing your skills. Heavier strings have a fuller sound, but are harder to play. If you prefer rhythm guitar (strumming and arpeggiating chords), you can start with the heavier strings (11-12 gauge) if you wish.
- Get roundwound strings, which is a term for how the string is constructed. You'll also find flatwound, tapewound, pressurewound strings, which are all great for playing different styles of music, but are more expensive. Again, after arriving to an intermediate level of playing, start experimenting with different strings.
- If you need to change strings, change all of them at once. Don't be tempted to change just one if it breaks.
And that's pretty much all there is to it! Just keep it simple while you are still just learning how to play the guitar, and after you become more proficient, start experimenting with the different sounds of the other, non-basic guitar strings. Good beginner guitar strings for the electric guitar are D'Addario Nickel Plated 10-46 and Fender Super-bullet Nickel Plated Steel 10-46. They are consistent from pack to pack, meaning they will sound the same each time (unlike many other string manufacturers).
